Check out First Friday, art is anything but dead here....that's just one event. There's Second Saturday, there are tons of events at all the galleries on assorted days....I feel like I'm surrounded by art and artists constantly. Well, ok I am surroundedin my neighborhood

Also the Bilh House has some good openings on Fridays usually. There will also be a Studio Tour on Feb 14 & 15 in the older neighborhoods where alot of artist have their studios... Monticello Park, Alta Vista, Beacon Hill, Deco District, etc. Look for on line website in Jan. I really liked this tour because I discovered all kinds of artist in all kinds of places. It was like a treasure hunt. I bought a really nice painting from an artist named Michele Love.

Go to Meetups.com for San Antonio and there are several types of Art groups that meet on a regular basis.

Also, the McNay has an awesome collection of Contemporary Artists' works....and a number of events and lectures. They've just reopened after a huge expansion project. It's wonderful.

The San Antonio Museum of Art is in the old Lone Star Brewery.....more classic art....and great touring exhibitions.

Herweck's Art Supply downtown also has a lot of information about the Art Scene in SA, whether it's classes, meetings, organizations or exhibits. They've been around almost a century.

Lots more....but you'll find out through some of these connections.

Definitely go to First Friday. There are several artsy places in that area of town - Southtown - San Antonio Arts District, San Antonio, TX You can also check out the free local newspaper, SA Current, for additional art openings and events. You can pick this up several places around town. One other option is to check out the san antonio artists classifieds - craigslist.

Good luck on your search!

Default South Town

You can pick up flyers at Mad Hatters on Beauregard, or visit Blue Star for current installations. Fill in the guest books. Once you're on the LIST, you'll be invited to all the openings you can schedule. SA art is vibrant, hip and very alive and active all over the city. The Witte has a great show now, and the docents at the McNay may have current information. I hope you have a great time strolling our diverse cultural arts scene.
Have a great day!

First Friday WAS about art... What's it turned into is a messy mix of Fiesta drunken behavior, trinkety crap and galleries that are more interested in selling than educating. First Thursday is also headed that direction as more and more folks find out about it, pour into Blue Star and treat it as just another block party.

Red Dot is a good thing. I second that suggestion.

I'd email Elaine Wolff at The Current and see what's happening. She's got a great beat for what's exciting in town and where art is happening vs an 'opening' where people only go for the free booze.
