Default need advice bad on a good middle school had bad experience last year

Any advice on schools my child goes to a middle school we have been having issues with. I really want a great school. Any advice on a good charter, public or private I personally would perfer something that is very reasonable or no cost at all because of finances at this time. We want a great education for my children Please let me know of schools that you have had good experience with and great teachers and academics. We live in Bexar county near 1604 and 90

You could start with the schools rated Exemplary at TEA. The 2008 list of exemplary schools that I'm familiar with seems to match my perception of "good schools."

Searching at Databases - Texas school accountability ratings | chron.com - Houston Chronicle (http://www.chron.com/databases/texasschoolaccountability.html - broken link) reveals the following exemplary middle schools in Bexar County: Bush, Tejeda, Lopez and Randolph Field. If those aren't an option for you, the schools rated "recognized" should be above average, too.

No recs for private or charter. However for public, don't you have to go to the school that you are zoned for? Are you considering moving?

I'm pretty sure here it is not allowed and that you have to go to the one you are zoned for. I think the only exception is if the school has been rated as a "failing school". Someone correct me if I'm wrong and help nikip....

I believe you're correct. Even in that instance, the transfer has to be within the district.

I was assuming with my answer that nikip was prepared to move within the city to get to the attendance area of a better school.

mama....pretty sure you're correct. Nip.....unless you move, you may not have much choice. There really isn't such a thing as a 'free' private school unless there might be some scholarship involved. You might want to go to the district office and ask about policies for your district.

Bullying is a horrible problem, and sometimes it just takes getting the school to be an advocate for your child. I know....teachers are taxed enough with managing large classes etc....but it wouldn't hurt to talk to everyone from the guidance counselor to the principal if you're child is stuck at that school. There should be a "no tolerance" policy for bullying...but it's so hard to inforce....especially when they step foot off campus.

Good luck to you!

Default Start at school

I agree that you definitely should start by talking either to your child's teachers, guidance counselors or administrators. I have heard that in extenuating circumstances inter-school transfers are available if the environment is deemed too hostile for your child. But having said that...that means that all other avenues have been explored and have proved fruitless. Talking to the school would be the best place to start.

The circumestances have been bad and I just purchased a home so I cannot move now. We had the understanding the Nisd had great schools. I guess If I tried to move my child out how would I know I was going to a better situation. Are there good charter schools are christian schools or does anyone know of a magnet middle school in the area we live near 90 and 1604. I have talked to the Principals, Counselor's and trying all we can but it seems that they are not doing much.

If you live in NISD, talk to the principal at your child's school about an "administrative transfer" to another NISD campus. Generally speaking, this is granted in cases where there is a legitimate threat to the student's safety.
