I am a 35 single male who works in the restaurant business. I have the opportunity to move to either Houston or San Antonio and want to gather as much info as I can. Would like to live downtown, so any information on the vibe and living conditions downtown would be great. Especially any information on lofts. Also, good areas for night life, cool restaurants, culture, etc. Any and all information would be appreciate. TIA!

Please don't do it! SA is not very exciting. houston has got to be better. downtown SA is not well developed, kind of like the way that downtown LA is except a river running through it with bars, restaurants, hotels and tourists. locals tend to avoid going downtown for nightlife. you might like the vibe in "south town", the area immediately south of downtown, kind of bohemian, but gone upscale in the past few years.

I have found downtown Houston to be a dead zone in the evenings and weekends. Couldn't even find a restaurant open for breakfast or coffee Sat morning!

SA's downtown has a lot to offer. I am a local who spends most of my social life downtown. Helps that I live downtown too. SA's downtown is really coming back to life. It's not on a par with Chicago, but it's moving in the right direction. I'm from LA, and know LA's scene fairly well. Downtown LA is also starting to come back to life, but IMO has a lot farther to come than SA. SA is indeed much smaller than both Houston and LA, but it has a central core with a great vibe.

A quick search of this forum for the word "lofts" revealed a couple of dozen threads. These looked like the most promising threads, but you may want to do the search yourself and read more of them to get a more complete picture. A search of this forum for "downtown" would give you even more leads.

Houston has a hugely competitive restaurant scene... it's been ranked up with the top handful of great food cities in the country. Depending on exactly what your involvement is with the restaurant business, that could either help you or hurt you. The hot areas are Midtown, Washington Ave, Montrose, and even some of the suburbs (like Sugar Land and The Woodlands). Midtown or downtown however, would get you near the light rail line.

I'd like to add downtown LA has come to life already. I can't believe how nice that area has become. There are some really incredible artists there.

As for the OP, I think SA is a better choice than Houston. Lower costs, lower crime, nicer places to live. Plenty of places near downtown to choose from.
Here is a link I found on SA currents on the recent lofts being developed in the downtown area. Quite a few are becoming available.

I would also go to mysa.com and go to real estate section and search under the sub-catagory of "condos" and you will some pop up also.
