Uvalde vs. Hondo
Can someone compare these two cities/towns for me? I have a good job opportunity in Uvalde and considering my options. Im mainly concerned about crime. It seems these two cities have a considerate amount of crime, but I wanted to know which would be better to raise a family. Uvalde seems to have a great catholic school also. Does both cities have all the conveniences ( wal-mart, hospital, shopping, grocery etc)?

Uvalde would have more than Hondo... both are very small towns but I would go for Uvalde due to more conveniences. I doubt that they have alot of crime. The country is beautiful around there especially around Campwood and the Frio River but your going to be pretty much out in the sticks compared to bigger cities like San Antonio.

You'll be fine in Uvalde; just stay on the good side of Johnny Rodriguez

I'm surprised either has high crime, they're both small towns. Uvalde is bigger, and has more amenities, also a lovely park in the middle of it. It's the county seat for Uvalde. Nice place. Hondo is the county seat for Medina County, but it's much smaller, fewer amenities. Both have hospitals, but Uvalde's is bigger.

My son used to live near Uvalde and I visited it several times. He and I went golfing at their lovely course, there is a very nice HEB grocery store, the library is wonderful, nice hospital, downtown is fun with some nice antique stores and all in all, I think it's a very nice place.
I don't know much about Hondo except driving through it on the way to see my son. I really didn't care for it too much in general, but I never spent time there. I had friends that lived there for a while, teachers, and they liked it fairly well although this was many years ago.
According to city-data, the crime rate is a tad higher in Uvalde than in Hondo, but not enough to really matter. Population in Uvalde is about twice as many as Hondo.
Leakey is a fun place to visit north of Uvalde in Real County and there you will be in the Texas Hill Country. Acually before you leave Uvalde County heading north, you will begin to see the hills. Check out Garner State Park 30 miles from Uvalde in northern Uvalde County, very nice and on the Frio River.

I visitewd both and didn't care for either, so I marked them off of my list. You aren't kidding when you say out in the sticks. I went to campwood, which was a great disappointment, then traveled down to Uvalde. On my way there, the roads were so isolated that I was the only one on it. A deer ran out in front of my car. I was able to stop in time. It looked at me, laughed (just kidding) and took off to the other side of the road. There was a wire fence, I'm assuming a deer fence, that was too high for it to jump, so it had to run down the highway, on the shoulder. Being that there was no traffic, I was able to ride beside it and snap a couple of photos. I loved my trip. If I just HAD to make a choice between Uvalde and Hondo, I would choose Uvalde. I saw a big HEB there and a Walmart just down the street from it.

Now Leakey was a really nice, little, clean, quiet, country town. I really liked it, but it's just too far out in the sticks for me. I have to think about aging and the fact that I will need doctors and hospitals close by, as well as shopping that is close. If I were young, Leakey would have been a very nice place to live.
