Ideas for a home location? Will work downtown on Convent street (San Antonio: rentals, new home)

Hello,

I am currently negotiating a relocation package that would move my family to San Antonio, we are excited about the change.

I would be working on Convent street (about 5 blocks Northwest of the Rivercenter Mall if that helps) and would like to live in a suburban location outside of the city.

I don't mind a commute, but I would like to keep it under 30 minutes if possible. The areas that seem to come up most are straight North or Northwest.

We would be looking for a great public school system, and obviously a safe area for the kids (7&3) to be.

Secondary needs, tight neighborhood with a sense of community, either a pool or neighborhood association that has one for the homeowners, and I would not mind a bit of space to landscape and enjoy.

It appears that there are lots of new homes that are fairly competitive pricewise with existing homes on the market, we would not mind waiting for a home to be completed.

I am open to suggestions, and I did follow much of the great relocation guide in the FAQ's, it is just hard to visualize this information and would love some local perspective.

Oh, and we probably would spend no more than 340K on the house.

I am also looking for a good realtor if anyone wants to PM me with names.

Alamo Hts or Northwood... excellent area and best school district. You will be about to find a nice home for that price. Anywhere in the 78209 zip.

I would look at the Stonewall Ranch and Stonewall Estates neighborhoods. They are newer homes, very nice. They have a community pool, etc. They are on I-10 a couple miles outside loop 1604, but are right off the highway and very easy to get in and out of. It would be right about a 30 minute drive, depending on traffic.

Also look in the Crownridge area, or some of the Sonoma Ranch homes. Personally I don't prefer Sonoma Ranch because you have to deal with more traffic on 1604 to get there, but some really like it.

Alamo Heights and Northwoods are different school districts. AH of course goes to AHISD. Northwoods is serviced by North East ISD. Still great schools. Not as many neighborhood amenities but definitely a sense of real community.

TXRose...you're right about Northwoods, but the school district line sort of divides it in half along Vandiver Rd. Some of Northwoods is AH and some is NE.

Alamo Ranch is a great development building a new elementary, middle, and high school. tHE

Sorry, the elementary opens next fall and middle and high following year. The recreation center has a water park, soccer fields, etc. The drive into downtown is easy down 151 to 90, check it out. You can get a nice home in PUL

Have you thought about renting for 6 or 12 months? That would give you time to find yourself and know better what part of the city you want to live. I agree with Alamo Heights or Northwoods. You can find rentals there too.

Yes, renting is an option, but we would need to rent in the same school district as we would ultimately live, making it a bit more tricky to choose.

I will also be on a relocation package from my employer, however I can still rent for a while on the package.
