Oh yeah, and SMUBOY I'm actually from Plano. I went to West and now (unfortunately) go to UTSA. That will very soon change, I'm either going to SMU or UTD!

Don't get me wrong, SA is not a bad place--it's just very country, and southern. And if you're a minority, forget about opportunities. All SA-based major corporations upper level management here is all white, despite the city being a majority Hispanic.

Wealthy blacks in SA? Unless you're a basketball player for the Spurs, you can forget it. Also, the job opportunities' for new graduates is virtually non-existant AND jobs paying above $80k only constitute 2% of available jobs.

The Quarry is in the City of San Antonio, The golf course by the Quarry is either the Quarry Golf Club or the Olmos Basin city public course. No one designed San Antonio, it grew organically. And the roads form a wheel and spoke system if you can't tell. Finally if you don't like AH don't go there, they've survived 80 years without you, I'm sure they will make it a few more.

There's two golf courses next to the Quarry.

Probably the Quarry, as it was at the corner of Broadway and that street you turn down to get to the Quarry.

It's not that I don't like AH, I just haven't been to keen on a number of people I've met from there. Park Cities people are much nicer, and ironically, the Park Cities have a much more controversial, racist past.

I'm laughing at this, because I'm thinking of one of the richest areas of coastal South Carolina - Pawley's island. They have more bucks than a lot of the state, and have for decades, but sneer at the "new money". Some actually sport bumper stickers that say "arrogantly shabby".

The point being that a lot of exterior "flash" is not always an indication of wealth and culture. Some areas of the country turn their noses up at that sort of display, finding it gauche.

Default Happy in AH

I am originally from Houston and shared some of UTSASTUD's thoughts about Alamo Heights residents when I first moved to SA as a freshman at Trinity University. Having experienced some areas of true wealth and distinction in Houston, I didn't really undrestand what all the Alamo Heights fuss was about.

However, after graduating from Trinity and living in a few other areas around town, I have returned to the '09 area and have lived here for nearly two years now. I have never been happier. Never have I lived in an area where the residents are so eager to meet and welcome the "newbies" of the neighborhood. Every time I am working in the front yard, at least two or three friendly neighbors will walk by and initiate a friendly chat.

Also, the '09 residents are extremely active in their commitment to the preservation of the history of the area. As one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, I think that it is wonderful that the Alamo Heights community maintains that commitment to each other and to their homes. That used to be one of the defining virtues of people across the United States and unfortunately that pride in and commitment to community has all but been lost.

So who cares if the golf couse isn't the best in Texas? And a few extra pot holes just keeps people from speeding recklessly through our neighborhood. UTSASTUD, I'm sorry that you judged the quality of an entire community on one negative reaction from the patron of a bank. If I see you driving through the neighborhood, I'll still give a smile and a wave.

As much as I like rip on SA, it's really not that bad of a place. The people here do tend to be very nice, accomodating, and overall very polite. That's why I was so surprised about AH, but I'll leave SA alone.

I don't think it's trying to be a Dallas, Chicago, or New York. In fact, if I ever got rich enough, I'd actually give the city money to improve the highway system--which is really the worst I've seen out of any major city I've been in.

When you go north on I-10 toward Boerne, why do you have to cross over into oncoming traffic to get onto the highway? On I-10 toward downtown, why is there a freaking stop sign after you get off the highway?

I'd also remove all of these yield signs, as people here literally stop at yield signs--I can't tell you how many near accidents I've had with this.

I forgot which thread, but I've heard of discrimination towards blacks in SA. And I mean discrimination from Hispanics and Whites towards Blacks in employment and elsewhere. Is this really the case?

UTSASTUD.....I'm sorry you were treated poorly....by anyone for any reason. I live in 09 and I wouldn't behave that way. It will bother you if you let it.....I'm so over rude people that I don't see them anymore.

FYI in general...re the Golf Course....the one off Basse Road is the Quarry Golf course, which is a public course and maintained by the city of San Antonio. The Quarry Golf and shopping are all inside the City of San Antonio...not Alamo Heights......if you find a pot hole that is dangerous you can log on to the city of SA and report road repairs.

The other golf course in the area is the San Antonio Country Club....@ N. New Braunfels and Burr Rd. It backs up to Fort Sam Houston....and touches Terrell Hills and Alamo Heights. It's for members only.

I know for the kind of money I want to make, the opportunities here are nil, and that's pretty much regardless of race. But there definitely seems to be an "old boys club" here, made up of all white males running your major corporations (Valero, AT&T, USAA).

What struck me is how the city is a majority Hispanic, yet they do not constitute a proportionate number of high level positions.

The same thing is in Dallas as well, but there are still more opportunities there for minorities in Business 1. because there are so many more companies there, and 2. because it seems easier to break into than here.

And about job opportunities, there are none to begin with, so a college student looking for a job--good luck. The people working there are usually in their 30's, and not in school so it's easy for the employer to make a decision.
