Saltwater Catfish
I was in Corpus Christi over the weekend and saw all these people catching saltwater catfish and throwing them back. Can someone tell me if these are good eating or why you think they might have been throwing them back?

I'm not much of a fisherman but it sounds like they were catching hardheads. Usually considereda trash fish. They can put the hurt on you too.

We used to catch saltwater catfish in Florida. They are great to fish for as they put up a heckuva fight for their size; but catfish are bottom feeders and generally most peole avoid eating them. All the catfish I have ever had was farmed...

There is also a catfish called the Gafftopsail, or gafftop for short. I grew up tossing the hard heads and keeping and eating the gafftops. You can tell them apart because the gafftops have a "sail" for their top fin.

We were there this weekend too. After being there and seeing for myself I don't think I'd eat anything caught in the water. Was surprised at how dirty the beaches were.

Yes, they're dogfish, taste like she***t, cause they are bottom feeders, but will be caught on every line every time.

Don't eat them and be wary of their dorsal fin as the toxins on it can cause you a very bad days.
Gafstopsail fish are edible if you can get past the layer of slim that covers them.
An almost sure way to never catch one again is to go with an artificial bait. My favs for the coast are the Bone Super Spooks or a plain ole #7 T&A spoon.
Where do you fish?
