Default Hurricane Gustav approaching Texas?

What's the latest on Hurricane Gustav? Any chance San Antonio gets hit ?

Last edited by Bowie; 08-26-2008 at 07:55 PM.. Reason: Added question mark to title due to current uncertainty and member concern about title.

Quite early, but this one could be a doozy. I've heard the words 'Category 5' being thrown around. Looks like it could be trouble for the gulf oil facilities, so we'll probably see an increase at the pumps soon.

The people in New Orleans are probably getting a little nervous.

I'm seriously hoping it doesn't head this way because I have a flight out next week and my cruise is already getting crappier by the minute. Stupid broken ship

The cone of uncertainty could take it toward Texas for landfall, but a landfall in Louisiana looks more likely. If it does end up as a Category 5, we'll probably see a week of dry weather and record high temperatures as the storm pulls its moisture from the west. That's what happened when Rita hit just east of Houston.

Not at all! This was in fact the heated topic of the morning for us nerds in the Meteorology dept, and the concern/conclusion is this- if a ridge (high pressure) builds up in the SE, the hurricane will swing around the ridge meaning that it will continue to trek WNW toward Texas. Now if the opposite would happen, that is if there is no significant pressure difference or if there was a trough (low pressure) in the SE, the hurricane will curve northward (counter-clockwise around the low) and hit the other gulf states- Miss, Ala, Flo.

So really it's not the hurricane itself, but the environment around it, that will determine its landfall. Supposedly they expect the first option to occur- a ridge build up in the SE and Gustav be swung toward TX or LA

BUT! This is a ways out, being that they don't expect Gustav to even reach the gulf till Sun... so we'll see what happens...

(now, as far as intensity, THAT is a different story)
