From reading a lot of posts, I read that people are very friendly in Texas, but my question is this.....are people just being nice / polite / friendly on a superficial level or are people truly friendly....actually want to get to know you, be friends, meet up, etc (more so then in New England).

There are superficial people everywhere, you can't avoid that. But, I truly think people here are really that friendly. I know that when I see someone on the street, or at a store, or where ever, and I say, "Hey, how's it goin?" I really mean it. It's not just small talk. If I'm sitting outside and see someone driving by and I wave, it is a sincere "Hello." Now, I'm just speaking for myself, but I'm sure many will say the same.

There was just that one time that 4 year old wouldn't get off the horsey at HEB so you could have your turn. That was brutal.

Speaking for myself...I'm so nice I glow!!!!! Actually, people are friendly and want to share what they know. It helps make things better for those new to the area. Texas is a whole other world. So different from when I was a Yankee. I'm now a naturelized Texan. I wasn't born here, but sure glad I found it.

In my experience, in Texas, when people are friendly they're usually being genuinely friendly. But I never found Texans to be so friendly that they make your teeth hurt, like one might experience around areas in the South (Tenn, Alabama, Georgia and the like.) In the that region, friendliness is part of the culture, so it has nothing to do with genuinely caring about you. If a store clerk asks you how you're doing, they don't really want to know. It's just that it's polite to ask.

Being from the north, I too am sometimes suspicious of the overly sweet "Sirs" and "M'ams," etc. It seems patronizing at times to me, but I do believe it is usually genuine or a good act.

Not Patronizing!
Sirs and mam's are never patronizing. Most of us in Texas were brought up in such a way that if we did not say it we could be in BIG trouble and have a lot of explaining to do. It is a simple and VERY polite habit that taught us to respect our elders when we were young. I still say it even to people younger than me when I answer them. I wish more places taught their children this simple gesture of respect!
