Not just sheltering, but ALL the expenses involved in an evacuation. Hundreds of buses and ambulances are being staged right now for deployment to the coast. Each is equipped with medical supplies and staff. During the last evacuation, C-130s were bringing people in. There is a heck of a lot involved in an evacuation, it's amazing.
Heck, I think they have to pay a small fortune just for all the conference call lines!

I have a really hard time believing San Antonio is going to get 100mph winds. I can't believe that the meteorologists in SA have anything in the way of information that NOAA doesn't (like saying it would be a cat 4 or cat 5...?!) ...has SA ever experienced a hurricane in the past?

I'm going to vote for the storm dying out in the water somehow... because if it ends up even looking like it might impact Galveston at all, I'll likely end up with some in-laws driving on over and staying awhile.

Be safe everyone there in SA land!!!
Take every reasonable precaution beforehand and the earlier the better. As Anthony mentioned, stock up... fill up every one of your vehicles w/gas, have at least three days worth of drinking water and food for everyone, medicine, first-aid kit, all-purpose or baby wipes, flashlights, portable weather radio/tv & batteries, candles and/or lanterns, work gloves, sturdy shoes, ponchos, etc. And, for those coffee drinkers, a non-electric coffee pot for the gas stove or grill, or a few thermos' filled before the electricity goes out! And, don't forget cash... the stores & stations can't take credit/debit cards w/o electricity!
Our prayers are with all of you that this totally misses our beloved State of Texas! But, if not, remember... there's a fine line between being a hero and a fool... and we're selfish enough to want you all back here ship-shape!

Anthony once stated that the worst thing that SA could experience would be a direct Corpus hit and straight up to SA...possibly giving us 100+ MPH winds.

Hurricane Dolly spun off tornados and flooding and she only had 100mph winds when she came on shore at Brownsville. If a cat 4 or 5 came on shore it is possible as SA is only 161 miles from Corpus and the winds of the storm can be felt 75-100 miles out from the center if well defined.

I sure hope it stays away from SA somehow. I'm supposed to close on my house this week. The sellers move out on Wednesday, but I won't be there for 2.5 more weeks. Hope I don't arrive to an empty slab

Best to defer to the experts on this question. High winds, yes....mph????
I'm more concerned about tornadoes and heavy rains and flooding....that might accompany those high winds. But again...deferring to the experts. Anthony has connections with NOAA!

. . . Carla came through and made a big mess of things. ( LaGrange is about the same distance inland as is San Antonio. You can do a Google search and read about the damage).
Hurricane damage is not limited to coastal areas by any means. Probably, San Antonio won't be touched by Ike but that's not to say it can not happen. Not to worry though as many, many Texas inhabitants are ignorant when the subject is hurricanes. Hurricanes are not, by law, limited to destroying only coastal properties. They pretty much do as they wish.
