I am not on either side, but find this argument to be quite weak.

Time warner pays all other channels for their signal. That is, all channels except for the locals. These channels don't make a lot of money per subscriber (most don't. som like ESPN do), but get some money as compensation per subscriber. The most watched channels, generally, are the networks and they don't get any compensation for providing their signal to time warner. They do get compensation from Dish, Direct, Grande and, apparently, AT&T. They have figured out a way to come to terms with these other providers and make it work financially for all parties. Why can't Time Warner figure out a way to do this too? Because they don't want to.

Everyone that is mad at KSAT needs to consider that they are only the first to play this game here in San Antonio. The next network affiliate to have a contract renewal will play the same hardball that KSAT is currently playing. It is happening all over the country (in fact NBC just pulled their signal from TW in Austin). the reason TW is fighting so hard is to prevent this from happening in all other markets - thats my guess. I suspect this will be precedents for the other networks as far as bargaining power when it comes time to negotiate their new contracts.

As y ou have already stated in this thread several times, it is the consumers that lost. But, in the end, is it really? This is a customer service issue. If you aren't happy with the customer service you are receiving from your given provider (in this case, TW) take your business to someone else. I switched to Dish 3-4 years ago when TW wouldn't get ESPN2HD, Fox affiliate in HD (Superbowl in SD are you kidding me) and refused to get NFL Network. I now get more channels, far more in HD, better quality and pay less. The point I am making is there are alternatives out there. If you aren't happy, try someone else out. I know that I am happy with my decision to switch.

[/steps off soap box]
Hmmm.... None of that explained why we should ignore that KSAT 12, and apparently other channels, are being greedy and raising our rates. Their channel is already free to anyone, but for some reason if I have cable I should have to pay for the channel. That doesn't make any sense. I don't care if there are already other instances of the same thing happening, TW is in the right to stand their ground.

why is it that TW has to raise rates to give you this channel when no-one else does/did?

I wasn't clear in that regard.......sorry.

Also, and correct me if I am wrong, isn't there a 5.00 or so dollar fee for your cable bill associated with network programming or something like that?

Maybe KSAT is charging other providers less? Their advocate who posted above seemed reluctant to discuss the money involved when I challenged him to provide details.

Satellite charges a fee like that to receive local stations. They used to be required to be carried on basic cable, but stations recently gained the ability to charge providers for carriage.

i have satellite and know about that charge. I thought I remembered a fee that was "rolled into" the big package that was for locals of some sort. It has been a long time since I have had TW so I can't remember it specifically.

Default Facts

1. KSAT is asking for less than a penny per day per subscriber.

2. KSAT programming - especially its newscasts - are ENORMOUSLY popular in San Antonio.

3. So far this week, TWC has lost more than 10,000 subscribers to alternative carriers because of the threat of losing KSAT - that's about 12 MILLION DOLLARS per year in revenue lost.

4. Directv and DishTV are considering bringing in installers from outside the region because demand for their service by fans of KSAT have outstripped the local installers ability to keep up.

TWC is on the verge of crying "uncle"... they have been able to ignore weaker stations in other markets... but KSAT is way too strong and TWC is currently paying a heavy price for underestimating that.

Get ready to go through this again with KENS-TV - their contract with TWC is up in early 2009.

TV Guy......where did you get the 10,000 subscriber number? Do you have similar info for KXAN - TWC in Austin?

ksat doesn't broadcast their news in HD, so why are they popular? I'll watch an occasional football game or car racing on abc, but otherwise I could care less if they went away.

You aren't getting KSAT for free if you have time warner. They are charging you for it (whether it shows up in the bill or not) and KSAT is well within its rights to get paid by time warner. I made this analogy earlier... If you were and artist and someone was making copies of your work and selling them, you'd want to be compensated for that, wouldn't you? TWC is taking KSAT's programming and selling it to their customers without compensating KSAT. Thats wrong. Arguably criminal.

I'm privy to inside information. Lets leave it at that. KXAN is a different situation. They aren't anywhere near as popular in Austin as KSAT is in San Antonio. Cable penetration in Austin is much higher (60%) than it is in San Antonio (45%). KXAN is NBC - which is in the gutter ratings-wise.. so they just don't have the leverage that KSAT does. Again... KENS is going to go through the very same thing in early 2009. CBS programming as well as KENS AM & 10 pm news are popular... and unless TWC learns its lesson from this go-round with KSAT... they're gonna lose more subscribers.
