Good areas to live around Lackland AFB???
My husband and our family have orders to PCS to San Antonio in December. This is my first PCS, and I now realize I have gotten a very late start on all the things I need to do.
Where are good areas to live around Lackland? We want to rent, and we need to be within 10 miles of the base (I do daycare). We have 2 kids, 4yo and 6mo...He's actually going to be working at Brooks (we're not too worried about traffic, his hours are 1300-2300)...but I need ideas for where to look. I've only been to Texas on vacation, and obviously didn't care much about housing while I was there...LOL...
Help, please?!?!?!

You won't have any problems looking for somewhere to rent that will be close to base. You might look in the 78251 zip code. Also 78245. I'm sure other folks will post some other zips.

I would look at the muliple neighborhoods off of Potranco Rd. The zip code in this area is 78245 (from what I know). I would go to mysa.com and look under real estate/rental/zipcode and see what you find! It's about a 7 mile drive from our neighborhood. It's a clean, safe, area with plenty of shops and things to do. I hope that helps!

Make sure you check at the Housing Office at Lackland and/or Randolph for rental listings. I don't know if they have their listings on line, but please check. You can also go to militarybyowner.com, which includes rental listings. Use the Family Support Center at Lackland as much as you can, they'll be really, really helpful.
You'll do fine, but use the in-place support systems and DM me if this old AF wife can be of any help!

Zip Code 78245 is south of Potranco and 78251 is north of Potranco. I'd suggest 78251 and closer to where Potranco intersects SH151 so your husband could take SH151 southeast to Hwy 90, then east to Hwy 37, and south on Hwy 37 to Military Drive (Brooks AFB is west less than a mile from Hwy 37).

78254, not 78245, and 78251. Those would be my suggestions. Right in the immediate vincinity of base there is nothing desirable.

I agree not 78245. Also 78253. My husband is stationed at Lackland, only takes me about 15min. to get to base.

I would let the poster decide if she likes the area 78245. I know a lot of people, including us, who live in a beautiful, safe, clean neighborhood in that zip code. It is only 7 miles from base, and takes us about 15 min. or so depending on where you are driving to.
Oktoflgrl, I hope you still check it out despite what some of the posters are trying to tell you. Let me know if you'd like to know the name of our neighborhood and I'll DM you. I know there are a few houses for rent in our neighborhood.

That's how I went to work, when I worked on Brooks. But the OP is interested in Lackland! Yes, both are on Military, but NOT close to each other!
Here is some good info on zips/areas:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/san-a...ode-index.html
We live in 78253, Villages of Westcreek - corner of Potranco and Hwy 1604. Nice place. From what I can tell all the neighborhoods in the Potranco area are pretty decent! There are new homes everywhere in San Antonio, so finding a good place shouldn't be too hard. Even if it's a temp place until you find something more comfortable. There are tons of for sale and for rent signs in Westcreek....
