Your description of a koláče was what I think of when I hear the term. I lived in the Slovak Republic from 1993-94, and we'd get them from the local shops. I've seen them advertised around here (the Valero at 1560 and Culebra is one place) but I have yet to try one. As with the "wurst taco," I suspect it is a bastardization of the real thing...

Cheers! M2

It's typically spelled kolache in Texas, and they're extremely popular in certain parts of the state, particularly places with historically large Czech populations. I've met more than one person who has said, "You haven't eaten kolaches until you've been to _________."

I'm willing to bet you'd find something similar to what you had in Europe if you knew where to look.

They have kolaches at Broadway Bakery (one on Broadway, one on De Zavala) and I have also had them at Bear Moon in Boerne, TX.

'Koláče' is the Czech spelling, it's been "Americanized" ('č' is pronounced 'ch')...

Understood. I figured the conscious use of diacritical marks reflected some insider knowledge on your part. I commented on the "Texanized" spelling only because I wanted to be sure everyone knew, uh, kolaches are a big deal in central Texas.

Ditto that. It's the only nice part of driving to Dallas, and a bonus on the trip back. It's well worth the stop!
