Don't laugh...but we used EBay for our last daughters wedding gown.
There are LOTS of beautiful, brand new, designer gowns from NY and all over the world that are available, and we got her a drop dead gorgeous gown that retailed for 4K for $900. The fact she is 5'1" and all the detail work on the skirt portion required us to have it taken up at the waist cost another $125 in alterations, but the dress was absolutely unbelieveable and unlike ANYTHING we could find here in SA.
Search for NEW BRIDAL GOWNS and you will be amazed!! Just watch the sizes...they all have the measurments and she was SHOCKED that she had to order a size 6 altho she was wearing a size 2 clothing at the time...for some reason they run small.

I bought my dress at Julian Gold.... pricey? Yes... but you cannot beat the service and experience.
AND- my dress (designed by Anne Barge) was actually on sale!!! They have a big sale sometime in the fall... not sure if they've already had it yet or not. However, most dresses are still well over $1K... and probably more in the $2K+ range. But still, I was so pleased!

I was going to suggest Julian Gold also. Got my MOB dress there for our daughter's wedding last May and loved it as did a lot of others. Michelle was awesome and completed my ensamble with the perfect jewelry and shoes! Best wishes!

I would second Ebay or Craigslist. I say this because I have seen them, and also because I am currently selling a beautiful Vera Wang wedding gown on craigslist. Keep all your options open.

I had my unique, beautiful, gorgeous, PERFECT wedding dress designed and custom made by "Katherine" at New Creation Designs...It was absolutely the most beautiful thing I have ever worn and it was made for ME. Katherine is a wonderful person, she is attentive, and I was not disapointed in the least. She is located off Wetmore by the Airport renting space at Anitas Tees. Check her out at the very least for a consultation.

I got my dress at Bridal Galleria on San Pedro. Others to try are Debi's Bridal (San Pedro), Bella Bridal & Bella Notte (Both in Stone Oak), Lavish Bridal (Huebner Oaks) & THe Bridal Salon (Hildebrand N of Broadway)

I purchased my dress from Mayfair Bridal. I LOVED their selection. It was very couture, so much so that I almost walked out without asking the prices because I didn't want to be disappointed. I was so surprised to find the dresses were comparably priced to David's Bridal. The dresses were unique, and just so much prettier than the typical stores. I really loved shopping there.
BTW, I purchased my bridesmaids dressed from The Bridesmaids Store in Austin. Anyone looking for bridesmaids dresses must shop there. It really is a one stop shop because they carry all designers and all colors and they have all the catalogs and color swatches.
