Just as an FYI about the numbers...

I just found out this morning that in SCUCISD, there were over 3500 applicants for under 100 positions. That gives you kind of an idea about what the competition is like, at least in the small districts around town. I would imagine that Alamo Heights experiences similar types of numbers. While I'm sure that NISD, NEISD and SAISD have many thousands more applicants than we do, they also generally have many, many more open positions.

That being said, we have had a couple of folks hired just within the last couple of days, so there is still a lot of hiring going on...

the idea that there is a teacher shortage is just something to stir up the media--there is not a shortage of teachers except for a few teaching areas like special education and in the sciences like physics/chemistry and maybe some isolated topics like Latin or else in districts where people don't want to teach--geographically isolated, difficult teaching environments, state minimum pay scale
---several years ago when speech/communications became a required course rather than an elective there were districts needing extra speech teachers and if you had that certification it was much easier to get a job...

most district I know in the DFW area have plenty of applicants for any general class like English or social studies (where most of the coach splits are located usually) elementary teachers on variety of grade levels and with ESL or English as Second Language certification...sometimes music teachers if they need a specialty band instructor or foreign language or computer classes perhaps--

but usually it is difficult to get a real --not in a job fair--interview...TX itself turns out plenty of new teachers each year and every one has to do student teaching to get a degree--they usually have an inside track if there are job openings at their schools and even they have difficult time getting a job...

dont know why the media and people persist in repeating that untruth that there is a teacher shortage--there is a teaching JOB shortage...
plenty of willing teachers for good distrcit--not enough slots...

this is the link to TEA regions around the state--each region has a link to every school district and also a link with a searchable jobs database--so yu can see if there are new postings and maybe find a district you were not aware even existed...

Regional Education Service Centers

I noticed that the SA region does not sponsor a jobs bank--says to seach each district's web site
so guess it vaires..
this is a link from the administrators assoc with job search you can be fairly specific by teaching area and grade level...

Region 20 does have a job bank, but it's mainly the smaller districts in the surrounding areas that post there. As for me personally, I check tasanet.org because they list both teaching and administrative positions.

You also have to keep in mind that almost all of those 3500 applicants we had also applied to most of the surrounding districts, so the pool of applicants may look big, but when you factor in how many teachers are being hired throughout the county and surrounding areas, the pool of available applicants can get pretty small pretty quickly.

I would argue that there is more of a shortage in the San Antonio area than in other areas of the state. All you have to do is look at the salaries around here compared to other parts of the state.

The cost of living in San Antonio is one of the lowest in the state, heck, one of the lowest in the country for that matter, yet the starting salaries here are through the roof (on the order of almost 100% increase in the last 12 years). Compare that to Austin with a much higher cost of living and much lower (thousands lower) starting teacher's salaries. Now, it's not exactly fair because UT is located there, San Marcos is close, which means they have an abundance of teachers, so they don't have to pay as much, but even looking at Houston, Dallas and the like, San Antonio's salaries are on par with the rest of the state even though it costs much less to live here.

Hi Everyone,
No luck yet...The principal with Judson that interviewed me was moved and a new principal has not had time to re-interview me. I'm trying to be patient but am getting anxious.

Question...if my old employer (notified me in December I would be non-renewed and asked me to resign due to a personality conflict, finished out the year, was told I'd get a referral if they were happy with my performance the second semester) decided to block my getting hired, what can I do to overcome whatever he has said? By the way, he was incompetent enough to be removed from that position, although he still works in the district.

Question...My teaching certificate in AZ expires 8/23...and SBEC has not gotten around to my application. I've emailed them, and the fingerprinting is done, the fees are paid...so, any advice people?

Has anyone gotten a job yet? I am still looking for one and is hard to find one. I applied to all the SA districts and nothing yet. I am looking for a bilingual teaching position....they say that there is a shortage but when it comes to hiring a new teacher the rules change. I am getting my certification through an ACP program and they don't help you get a job either. We have to find it on our own. Any suggestions???? I really don't want to sub...for any districts either. Thanks!!!

Are you particular about the district? I accepted a teaching position about a month ago, but have gotten a few calls since then from Edgewood ISD - mainly looking for elementary teachers. Did you apply at Edgewood? Are you certified in bilingual only or in any other areas?

Anyone read yesterday's Express-News? The front page had a story of the lackof teaching jobs in SA. Apparently, with the exception of certain MS and HS positions, SA has an abundance of qualified applicants. There was also an interview with an experienced teacher who has yet to obtain a position, while seeing brand new people get hired.

This confirmed for me what I saw at job fairs this year. If it weren't for my stident teaching (NOT internship) and subbing, I would not have been employed either. Yet I know of several who did exactly what I did, and still are not employed.

Any comments?

I was also surprised to see the actual numbers hired by the different ISD's. Since Jan. 1, NISD hired 853 people, NEISD hired 600, and SAISD hired 377. This is a far cry from the 1400+ that NISD has said that they would need? Or are these numbers accurate?

Im still searching myself, interviewed with SAISD last week but no openings been calling JISD and ECISD for three weeks getting nothing but voicemails even after talking to a real person and no responses to the voicemails either. Very suprising since Spec Ed is supposed to be a high needs area.
