ah heres a helpful hint then bc Im right by Randolph also, as long as you are on the road by 515 at the latest, also the best way I learned to take to get there is straight down 1604 west to military dr exit there go left take it all the way to wurzbach just be careful of your speed bc cops like to hide in some of the areas around there in shavano park, go right on to wurzbach take it all the way down til you hit ewing halsell turn right and go down a little ways youll see winston school on your left, best parking I always found is right across from it on the right side. Orientation is usually in the gym and they will probably have someone directing people. Good luck hope that helps first couple of times traveling I tried finding the best way and that seemed to be pretty much it. Special Ed is a good track.

Default Getting a teaching job if not living in S.A. yet?

We are hoping to move to San Antonio this August - I grew up there off and on during my school years as my father was in the Air Force. I having a teaching certificate for elementary and middle school from out of state and also have a 1 year TX certificate in the same areas.

I know a lot of the districts don't require letters of intent until July 13, so I understand positions will hopefully be opening up. My question is, how the heck does one go about getting a teaching job in S.A. when one is not yet living there? The school districts want to do screening interviews in person. Same for any actual interviews for positions. We went to San Antonio a couple of weeks ago for a few days just to get kind of acclimated again plus for me to attend the big job fair at Blossom Athletic Center. The job fair was crazy; the few districts to whom I was actually able to speak said they are not looking for elementary or middle school right now. I don't understand why they have the job fair in June when they won't know many of their openings until July. I have talked to a person at one school who called and wanted me to come in to interview plus a person at central office for another district - both said to call them when we do move to town and they can let me know what positions are still available.

But we don't want to move if I don't have a teaching job lined up first. My husband doesn't have a job yet, either, but we aren't as worried about him finding one (he is in retail management, which he doesn't really want to do, but will do it temporarily until we get settled). I just don't know the best way to do this. I have applied to all of the districts and been contacted by some, but, again, they want to talk to me in person and there just isn't a way for us to fly back there just for an interview or two... Any suggestions or anyone who has been in this particular situation recently?

I would pick a week, probably mid to late July, to come back to SA, and set up your interviews for that week. School is starting a week later this year, so school districts won't be scrambling to find people until mid August, but resignations usually have to be turned in by June 30. If you pick a week, then tell the districts that you'll be in town and available for in-person interviews that week, they should be able to accommodate you.

Which districts have you applied with? I've found that with some districts, you just have to email the principals directly to get an interview.

Hope this helps...

SoCal transplant is on a distinguished road
We moved from Cali last year, however my wife already had been hired by the time we moved in early July. She did have to fly out several times to attend job fairs, interview, and show her intent. She got hired with NISD, as a middle school sci teacher. My wife's boss (principal) told her she was the only hired out of a job fair for their school (which had hired 10 new teachers).

Thorugh my wife, I now that several teachers left to go to some of the new schools opening this upcoming school year. Try getting info for Pat Neff MS

Word is that NISD and NEISD are hiring as many as 1,000 teachers, between the two. Good luck!

Getting a teaching job in San Antonio can be frustrating... the best districts are NORTHSIDE and NORTHEAST, but there are others that are good too...don't be discouraged...I was hired for my first teaching job in San Antonio the day AFTER school started in 1998.

Default How can I get a teaching job?

I was wondering if anyone knows what I have to do to be considered for a teaching job? I have a bachelors degree in Anthropology and I would imagine that is my first problem. Do I have to go back to school and get a degree in education or is there an accelerated method? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You would have to go through Alternative Certification. You can go to a district website and some of them have links to colleges/universities that offer Alternative Certification. You would also have to get certified in a position where there is a shortage. (Bilingual, Special Ed., High School Math, Science, Computer Technology)
You could also contact Region 20. Google "Region 20" and it will lead you to their website.

Re: Alternative Certification
Generally, the districts have enough applicants with regular certification and don't need to hire alt certs. There are certain areas in Texas (poor, very poor) where alternative certification might get you in the door.

I don't think that's necessarily true...the larger districts in the area recruit all over the country because there simply aren't enough teachers to fill the demand around here. NISD, NEISD, SAISD all recruit at colleges throughout the midwest in the spring to fill their teaching slots. Northside alone is looking for 1000 teachers this fall, and the local colleges (of which only Texas State is considered a traditional "teacher college") don't produce enough grads. There are always people hired after the first day of school and even situations where there are permanenet subs in classrooms for the entire school year.

I would suggest subbing where ever you can while you're doing your alternative certification, thus getting your foot in the door with administrators and getting your name known around the district. Once your certification is completed, you shouldn't have any trouble finding a job. Good luck!

By the way, Region 20's website is esc20.net
