Default Teaching Jobs

Hi all,

We are military and just moved here to San Antonio, which is a great thing for us. Everyone tells us how badly teachers are needed here, but my wife is having a HUGE problem finding a elementary teaching position. She already has her Texas certification and has a M.S. in Education. Not to mention a second Masters as well.

What/how/who does she need to call/write/email to find a decent job? She checks all the school web pages weekly and has sent resumes out to all the districts but no luck.

Any words of wisdom or insight into how one gets a teaching position here is SA is greatly appreciated.

Mid-year is always hard. I don't know what districts she's applied for, but there are 16 districts in San Antonio...it's probably a good idea to put in for all of them. The other thing I would suggest is getting in as a long term sub in one of the districts. That's always a good 'in' if principals and other teachers know your name. I work in Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD and there have been a lot of long term subs coming in lately.

Over the summer, Northside and Northeast ISDs will hire over 1000 new teachers between the two districts. Schertz is going to be hiring a bunch too...we're growing like crazy.

If you need any suggestions, or have questions about districts, PM me. I've worked in four of the districts here in town.

Thanks for the info. We figured it was the "off season" for hiring teachers here. Wow between NEISD and NISD over 1000 teachers are hired, we can only hope that she is one of them.

Slaleman we made it up your way to look around on Sunday...very nice area.

It's true...apply to all the districts and just when you're about to give up this summer, they'll all come calling.

Hi Chris24 and welcome to san antonio, we are also military (AF) and have been here since august 2006. I am currently training to be a teacher myself and a site that has a lot of the isd website listings on it is through my alternative certification program at http://www.actsanantonio.com/school-districts.html Im sure there is another listing but that has helped me in looking quite a bit. I have noticed currently that what a lot of places are hiring for is special education and thats what Im currently working on certification in.

Feel free to ask me any questions about the area either on here or through pm, true I know others have been in SA alot longer but I know its nice to get a perspective from another newbie.

Just be patient. They should start posting new jobs for next year soon. Northside is a great school district. With an M.S. she should be able to to get a really good job depending on her specialty. It is true Texas is such a teacher shortage area but that makes those with advanced degrees a true asset.
Good luck on her job hunt.

Just heard yesterday that as of right now, Northside is planning on hiring 800 teachers next year. North East is going to open a new middle school next year, so in addition to the number of teachers they would normally hire, they're going to have to fill those positions at the new campus.

Hello slaleman,

When you said next year, did you mean the school year beginning this August?

Chirs234,
Here is a jobs posting by NISD:

Chris24intexas is on a distinguished road
Hi all,

Had a prob with my screen name, so changed it to the much easier to not remember, lenghty name of chris24intexas...:-)

Anyways thanks for the optomistic responses. I know she has applied to the big districts (NISD & NEISD)...but again since this is the off season not even a hint of any opportunities with either. It is just frustrating that she has a Masters in Education, already has her Texas cert, and a few years experience and nothing...not even a sub job. Hard to believe there is a shortage when the districts won't even accept apps for subs.

Hopefully the spring brings good news for the summer hiring round for teachers (800+ teachers is a good thing). We are keeping our fingers crossed! Thanks again all.
