Seems like a lot to do, but I suppose if you think it cheaper than paying tuition for several kids, an option.
I personally think that parents sometimes put TOO much emphasis on the district...if your kid is not of the mindset to make the best of things, doesn't matter where they are...they will not bother. On the other hand, they can excel at anything they want from the worst of districts if the kid is so inclined. JMHO

Very well put Paka! No matter what school district your kid is in, the wolves are everywhere and if a child doesnt have a strong enough mind he can be eaten alive regardless of the rating of the school district you put him in. Are the numbers possibly less in a school district with money behind it? Probably - but I would be tempted to say those numbers may not always be so accurate.

My mom was in the same boat in the eighties. We were required to move to San Antonio due to the medical needs of my sister (Wilford Hall). We moved to Edgehill. That area bound by 410 to the North, Nacogdoches to the south, Broadway to the west and New Braunfels to the east might be your best. There is also the sliver around Robbins north of 410. Check the addresses up there with the AHISD street list as they can often be listed wrong on realtor.com. I have to say it was a great school to go to both educationally and culturally. It is not as homogenous as you can be lead to believe (or at least it was not back then.)
