Hey SA G.....from our location, Southwest Research would have been in the wrong direction of this flash. Catriona and I both saw it in the same direction....we were both in the NE quadrant of Bexar County and this light was definitely NW....not West or Southwesterly where SWRI would be from where we were located. Picture a line from NE loop 410 looking NW toward I-10 out toward the Dominion and Fair Oaks Ranch.

It's possible that it was something at Camp Bullis as Catriona suggested. Whatever it was, it lit up that whole part of the sky several times. Where ever it was located was too far for us to hear anything or feel anything.

Oh well.....we may never know.

People, please. No UFO crap. My high school science teacher always proclaimed, that there is no such thing as heat lighting - kind of a misnomer. I guess I need to research again. That being said, I saw the flashes through my windows, down here off Austin Hwy.

it's funny you mention this, because at about 8PM the power in my apartment complex off of Heimer went off, and even the neighborhood as well i think. i mean, i'm not very far from Bradley and I wonder if it was just lightning or if some kind of transformer malfunctioned...don't know if the two are tied, just wondering.

ummmm...can't see where anyone mentioned "unidentified flying objects".....so no one's getting crazy on us here.

The idea of heat lightning was mentioned, and from what I could find, "heat lightning" is more of a description than an actual phenomenon of nature. That being said....the conditions to create "flashes in the sky" that would be from distant thunderstorms with a high cloud ceiling were not present from what I could see.

Rex.... your explanation makes sense....but the sky was clear, so I don't think there was a lightning hit. I could see stars in the sky and no storm clouds in the distance in your direction.

However, a transformer malfunction for some reason is plausible. I just have to say that it was huge from my POV.....so that must have been some blackout!

With power going out at an apartment complex and a neighborhood, could it have been a car accident with someone hitting a power line? I live right by the curve where De Zavala turns into Babcock and every once in a while someone will hit the power line and we'll see a spark and then the power will go out for a while.

Back in 1999 I was working in St. Louis and saw a satellite come crashing down. It split in two parts and had a green glow to it. Really neat.

Well....at least three of us admit to seeing it. I'm surprised more people didn't.
It was more than a spark. We were at least 5-6 miles (as the crow flies) from Heimer (if that was general vicinity.)...and it was so bright to be seen across the horizon at dark from at least that distance. Catriona seemed to indicate that it was NW of where she was at Bradley MS. I'd like to see what she thinks on the transformer malfunction idea off Heimer, since Bradley is on Heimer.

wCat, I guess the transformer malfunction idea is plausible, but the way it lit up the sky, it had to have been a HUGE transformer.... Is there some sort of CPS power facility around the Heimer area that would have a transformer that big? I'm thinking of those gated areas with the huge electrical contraptions in them. Maybe something like that would have made a huge explosion, but not a regular transformer. Remember, too, there were three explosions, two that were huge, and one smaller one. Plus, it looked like it was on the horizon, not out in the area. Didn't hear of any emergency vehicles, nothing on the news, either.

There was some space junk that fell in the Pacific on Sunday night. Could it have been some of that space junk that hadn't made it into the atmosphere yet?

What ever it was, it definitely appeared to be an explosion of some sort.
