Oh no - I've pronounced it that way all my life (I also pronounce LA as AL-A and Japan as CHAP-AN...much to everyone's chagrin), it's a childhood thing that I can't ever seem to shake! Funny though, In Yooston, they pronounce the street (a major street at that) San Felipe as San Fill-lip-EE

Is is it ok to pronounce the spanish words the proper way or will locals not understand you?

It just feels weird to say "blang-ko" and not "blong-ko".

OMGosh.....that's true! Being a Texas-EX, I spent a lot of time on Gwa-da-loop in Austin. LOL!

Googie...for real? San Fe lip EE? Now that's a Texas accent!

I'm not hispanic, but I have a lot of hispanic friends. Some like to pronounce the Mexican or Spanish words with a latino accent. Some were born and raised in Mexico so Spanish is their first language....they tend to lean toward a Spanish pronunciation. Others that were born here go with majority .....
I find the German words harder than most...but then I grew up learning French! Totally worthless until I visit Louisiana!

Irnag....I totally wrote that one backwards. You are correct that it's generally pronounced Fred-er-icks-burg.

Yeah..it's not only in NYC...i've even heard it pronounced like that in Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, The carolinas etc...Although it could always be people from NYC in the area lol...I work for 411 and i always have to pronounce words differently depending on where the callers from...It gets annoying..But i remember the first time i said "houston" street in nyc the way we pronounce it here, and the caller almost acted like i was talking about a different street!
