Well I grew up speaking mostly spanish and though I am very fluent in English and no one would ever guess I Speak Spanish now.. I still Pronounce all spanish names in Spanish. I guess I just feel a lot more comfortable that way.. like

Nogalitos is No-ga-LEE-tos

San Jacinto is San ha-SIN-to

DeZavala is De-Sa-VA-la

Llano is Yano

Flores is FLO-res

and so on. But of course like I said before that is just me.. I am in no way saying these are the proper pronunciations.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mexia.
No it is not pronounced Mex-E-a.
I can't tell you how many times I've heard that from people out of Texas before
( and more than a few from Texas).

Lan-no (Yanno? 48 years here...NEVER heard that for the city name)...same reason it's Pear-is, not Puh-ree

and while were at it, Cotulla is a Polish name, not a Spanish word...Ku-too-luh, not ya.

Hi,

Dad was born in LLano. It is pronounced Lano not "Yano".

Me-HE-a was the way I always pronounced Mexia. So not know if that is right.

Funny post reading about all of the mis-pronunk-tiations.

I was told ma-hay-ah....."x" in Spanish is the "h" sound. Interesting that some towns have retained the original Spanish pronunciation and others got Anglocized or Germanized!

I've heard Llano both ways....but I'll yield to the locals there!

BTW - Mexia is Anna Nicole Smiths hometown.

Good point on the pronunciation of "Cotulla".....that double "L" probably has confused a few, especially getting closer to the Mexico border. Although I've never heard it pronounced Cotooya!

Ya'll know the joke about Mexia right?

One day two Aggies were driving down the highway on their way back down to College Station and got into a fuss bout how to pronounce Mexia. They was bickerin back and forth till the got to town and got off the highway and pulled up to the first place they came to and ran in. They ran up to the counter and asked the lady, "Really slowly will you tell us where we are?". Her response, "Maaaaaaaaaaaaack Dooooooonnnalllldssss".

Mexia - Ma hay eh (got relatives down that way). Groesbeck is another goodie by there. FYI, there is a "North Groesbeck up out of Childress not to be confused w/ the Groesbeck down by Mexia.

Llano - Lano. Never, ever have I ever heard anyone say it Yano. ECK! Just call down to Coopers BBQ and ask'em how they say it.

Here are some more for ya'll to figure out. Extra points to anyone that has ever been to these places
Chillicothe
Quanah
Concan
Nacogdoches
Leakey
Falfurrias
Pharr
Sabinal

OK, I've been to Con-Can, Lakey (how it sounds), Fal for short (I can't roll my r's well enough to say it properly), Far, and Sabbinawl. I've never been to Nackadoches, but I've been to the street in SA with the same name. Those first two on the list

Falfurrias -- two ways: Fal -furious and Fal - foorrias (roll those r's!)
Pharr -- Far
Sabinal -- Sa bin all

As for Mexia, Mah hay ah
