Default New Braunfels OR San Marcos??

Im visiting both cities this coming weekend so will get a good feel and see what both cities are alike. Im a 33 yr. single hispanic male, Im a computer drafter...been doing this for 9 yrs and enjoy it. My question is, Which of this two places would you recommend for someone like me?? If I must or am force to commute to San Antonio to work then it but much rather work in-town! Please give me the pros or cons from once city to the other, advice welcome too. Im looking in renting for 6 months or so then purchase a home, I make decent money but not rake it in so not looking to buy a dream house (around $40-$50k), Im almost outta debt and have saved money for this relocating, was not easy but Im doing it! Thought I would share that to give some closure. Thanks in advance and God bless you.

It sounds like your job prospects would be better in Austin, since there are more tech employers there. If you don't already have a job lined up, I'd recommend going with San Marcos, since it's ~15 miles closer to Austin. Otherwise, neither is a bad choice, so go with the one that's closer to work.

Also consider small towns like Kyle or Buda. I'm not sure you'll be able to find something for that price though. Best to find a Realtor that specializes in one of those small towns.

Ditto to what Kevin said. You also didn't mention where you work. Or do you work from home? That would be a major factor from my perspective. Also....San Marcos is predominantly a college town, so rentals are hard to find and usually mostly 18-23 age group. Purchasing there might not be a bad idea if you were to want to use it as rental property eventually. Just don't put a lot of money in it!

I don't think that a computer drafter is necessarily a high-tech job. Rather, I think it's something that architecture and engineering firms and the like hire for.

BTW, back to the OT: I personally like New Braunfels better, but I can't quantify why.

Default THANKS for the replies

I appreciate the input.

I will be in that area of Tx. this saturday...so will check out the smaller town or suburbs nearby, Im leaning more towards N Braunfels since is closer to SA. I have relatives in SA, can commute to work if I have to until find something locally. I like the idea of paying less property taxes (versus SA or Austin)so smaller towns would be fine so will consider smaller towns/cities plus could find a cheaper home...dont mind if the home need some repairs...Im kinda handy and aint scared! Thanks again.
