Default Moving to San Antonio for school-where to live?

I plan on moving to San Antonio for grad school next year and need help choosing which area of town to look in to. Since I live 7 hours away, I don't have the luxury of traveling back and forth frequently to personally research neighborhoods.

Some info about what I'm looking for and my situation:
-I will be attending St. Mary's University- How is the housing in this area?
-My husband is in the military (but not stationed in san antonio) so living near a base with a commissary would be a plus
-I don't mind a short commute (ab 30 min or less) if there are any nice small towns outside of the city (property with land would be nice)
-Also I'm very paranoid about safety - I've lived in two cities in Louisiana that have extremely high crime indexes and they've traumatized me - id really like to know what the safer areas of san antonio are and any safe surrounding areas

I know thats kind of a lot of criteria, but any info would really help. Thanks!

hey KC. im starting st. marys law next august and am officially moving there next week. ive only toured the area for four days with my realtor and finally bought a house in alamo ranch. i know san antonio probably as much as you do, but have seen alot of neighborhoods in those four days. based off of what ive seen and my realtors advice, stay north of san antonio. since you will be attending st. marys, you may want to strongly consider the northwest side due to its proximity to the school and heavy traffic. there are beautiful neighborhoods in that area also. depending on your budget, you can find a nice home in a safe neighborhood at a reasonable price. there are new subdivisions popping up everywhere. check out d.r. horton's and/or pulte websites to get info on house prices and locations in N.W. san antonio. hope this helps.

As far as my budget goes I'm not really quite sure if we'll be renting or buying. We'd like to buy a house but we don't know if San Antonio is where we'll be staying once I graduate. Dallas is where we had originally planned to move for good but none of the schools there worked out. If we do rent I'd like to rent a house or a town house and not an apartment. We currently pay $750 a month for a one bedroom apartment. We can afford at least that much for rent or a house note, probably a little more (closer to $850).
