Those are the Mayan temples, not Aztec. There are assorted Mayan temples throughout the Yucatan peninsula and south in Chiapas and into Guatemala. The major Aztec site is near Mexico City.

Have a great trip!

Personally, I'd fly to Mexico City rather than take a bus, but the bus could be an adventure in itself!

My wife and parents just recently drove into Mexico. We stopped in Monterrey and then continued to Matehuala. All the reports of drug cartels, killings, kidnappings, etc are all overrated. Just be careful like you would anywhere you go.

I talked to my wife about it, and I told her that criminals are usually sleeping around 9:00am, so that's when we are gonna be crossing the border

Good luck with that. Here is the most recent State Dep't alert concerning travel to/within Mexico.
Like I said, I was just in Ciudad Juarez last week...this is not overrated. We also had a friend of my wife's kidnapped and subsequently murdered (even though the ransom was paid) in Mexico.

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_3028.html (broken link)

"""A number of areas along the border are experiencing rapid growth in the rates of many types of crime. More than 1,600 cars were reportedly stolen in Ciudad Juarez in the month of July 2008, and bank robberies there are up dramatically. Rates for robberies, homicides, petty thefts, and carjackings have all increased over the last year across Mexico generally, with notable spikes in Tijuana and northern Baja California. Cuidad Juarez, Tijuana, and Nogales are among the cities which have recently experienced public shootouts during daylight hours in shopping centers and other public venues. Criminals have followed and harassed U.S. citizens traveling in their vehicles in border areas including Nuevo Laredo, Matamoros, Tijuana, and along Route 15 between Nogales and Hermosillo."""
