There was a period of almost a year when there was no EZ Grill on that stretch of 1604, so this seems like a nitpick.

LOL
I just posted that because when people think "closed" they think the business was unsuccessful or the area its in couldn't support it, etc. With EZ they just wanted to relocate down the road.

Do they still have the thing that sucks ice through the tube overhead into the dispenser in the middle of the room?

That is exactly why I quit going to that EZ's on Blanco/1604. Between the ice "tube," the screaming kids, and the acoustics of that place, you could not carry on a conversation with any dining companions. Not to mention the throbbing headache you'd get from all that noise!

Who starts these and why? We are so happy to have all these wonderful new places to go without having to drive downtown, and I feel like "Well who wants to go to a place thats closing down?" But none of them are. They are all alive and well and excited about the coming years of development in the area. I guess this is more a rant than anything, but it's just frustrating to hear the same thing over and over from some "well informed" people around the city.
NORTH SAN ANTONIO IS NOT DYING! IT'S EXPANDING! COME SEE!

I agree its nice to have the above restaurants on the northside of town since I take many clients out to these places several times a week, however, I have noticed the business at Kirbys is slower than ususal which affects the overall mood of the restaurant.
Many of my clients are not fans of the place and would prefer to go to the other resturants instead. I'm just sharing what I know.

Buck's Landing
The chinese buffet behind Rio Mambo
EZ's Grill
The deli that replaced EZ's Grill
Fazoli's
Back Yard Burgers
Eipstein's Burgers
Pasion!
Jack in the Box (1604 and 281 location)
Tin Star
Cheesy Jane's
Barnacle Bill's

Fat Burger
Eclipse Cafe
Bourbon Street Cafe
Also, a Panera just closed in Dallas near the Galleria - now that is suprising.

I noticed the parking lot rather empty on a regular basis months ago, too much competition from the other restaurants?

The Tom's Ribs at Vance Jackson and 410 closed about two weeks ago. We were there on a Friday and the next week there was a lease sign hanging outside. It's not my fave BBQ, but it is sad to see long-timers shut their doors.

My friends in the food & beverage industry say business has been off for several months now... some just a little, and some are seeing drops as much as 60% from last year. Restaurants have some of the lowest margins of any type of business... factor in the current economy and increased saturation in San Antonio... and of course you'll see many empty parking lots and even a few restaurants closing their doors.

I've had better dining experiences at the other restaurants located nearby so it's an easy choice.
Service and food consistently did not meet our expectations (and have been there on several occasions). SO I'll take my clients to Ounce, Silo, Wildfish etc since they are nearby and everyone is happy and I know what to expect when I go.
I hope Kirbys does well, it's just not high on the option list.
