Here we go again. I'm not sure how Austin is still growing faster than us but we added more jobs!

Quote:
Employment in the Austin-Round Rock region increased 1.9 percent between October 2007 and October 2008, outpacing many of Austin's economic development competitors, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The local region (Austin) added about 14,700 jobs in the 12-month period, bringing its total employment figure to roughly 781,000. By comparison: San Jose, Calif., added 700 jobs for a 0.8 percent increase; Raleigh, N.C., added 8,800 jobs for a 1.7 percent increase; Nashville, Tenn., lost 2,200 jobs for a 0.3 percent decrease; Seattle lost 1,900 jobs for a 0.1 percent decrease; Phoenix lost nearly 50,000 jobs for a 2.3 percent decrease; San Antonio added 17,900 jobs for a 2.9 percent increase; Memphis, Tenn., lost 10,800 jobs for a 1.7 percent decrease; Albany, NY, remained stagnant

A slow down in hiring or just spending in general?

Both I guess.

Personally in my household know that gas is down we have a lot more "extra cash" left over for eating out and going out.

I don't think that hiring is slowing.

Memphis with 10,000 lost... ouch!

Nearly 18,000 for SA even with the AT&T backstab.

Not to forget the shoot load of jobs coming in over the next couple of years via the military!

Wait, I completely missed the Phoenix numbers!? 50,000 jobs lost?

Question, is this net total or just raw numbers of added/lost?

I suppose it depends on the industry Ryneone. Construction start ups are slowing not only because of the season, but the economy. All industries and suppliers that support those projects are feeling the pinch. I've had two Realtors have told me this has been their worst year ever. Also some associates that are sub contractors for various businesses related to building materials, labor and supplies are experiencing hiring freezes along with business being down from last year.

Small mom and pop retailers are also hurting. Even churches are reporting that "giving" is down about 1/3. Just tidbits I hear from local feedback.
