Default Small country towns within an hour of Lackland?

I am considering maybe moving from way South Texas to San Antonio area in Sept and would be choosing to work at Lackland AFB or Brooke Army Medical Center/Ft Sam Houston.
I aint a city girl, and would be looking for a rural country lifestyle, within 1 hour commute to work.
What towns would you recommend for a single 42 year old country girl?

Blanco and Spring Branch might fit your criteria...they are north of the city on 281

firemedic242 is on a distinguished road
You could also try Lavernia, Castroville (easy fast drive), Bandera in the hill country, Medina Lake Area, Lytle....

Bandera and Castroville are West of SA.....very nice little towns. Also Lytle...a bit more rural but growing. Hondo is a bit farther out...but also a nice community. Boerne is wonderful, but getting congested and the commute might be hellacious.

If you're working at Lackland then communities to the west (Hondo, Castroville) would be perfect for you.

Blanco is nice; however, depending on what time you travel, traffic will be bad on Hwy 281 when you hit Loop 1604 and would be more than an hour to Lackland AFB.
Castroville is nice and a straight shot on Highway 90. You might also look at Jourdanton, Pleasanton, and Devine, all South/Southwest of LAFB.

which one of those towns would be the most "cowboy'd up" type of town. i am used to living in towns where rodeo is very active..

Castroville or Hondo still fit the bill if that's what you're looking for, bellestar. As has been mentioned, it's a straight shot down Hwy 90 and there are plenty of cowboys and hunters in each area!

Bandera is a big cowboy town too but that's a bit further north and you'd have to fight the traffic on Bandera Rd (Hwy 16) each way which would be a nightmare at times.

Blanco is very nice but totally out of the question if you want to be commuting within an hour or so to and from Lackland.
