UTSA is adding a football program
Quote:
The Texas Board of Regents this afternoon gave the green light to UTSA to establish an NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (Division 1-AA) football program, with the 'intent to advance' to the top level, Football Bowl Subdivision, 1200 WOAI news reports.
The plan calls for UTSA to develop an $84 million competitive athletic complex, which will be funded through increased student fees which were approved by students last year.

I forgot to post this earlier, but the entire UTSA Athletics Business Plan (including site plans for the new athletics complex) can be found in the UT System BOR agenda:

I remember my Freshman year in 97' when there was about 17,000 students and everyone was mad that such a large school as far as student base had no football program. At least a DII, or DIII team even. We all signed petitions, and went from door to door the ultimately were rejected. This is an awesome milestone!!! Finnaly the greatest sport in the world NCAA football in San Antonio! Hopefully they won't be playing in the Southland Conference long if at all. By 2011 should be well over 30,000 students, that sounds like UTSA can support a DI team in the Sunbelt, or C-USA Conference at least.

I can't wait to see what the stadium design will look like! $84million isn't too much for the entire sports project. I wonder how much of that goes into the stadium. I fugure it's gonna cost at least a good 50 - 75 million for a 12,500 - 20k seat facility.

A new football stadium is not a part of the 84 million. There is land set aside for a new stadium but it is considered a future project. The games will be in the Alamodome for a long time unless some major funding pops up. I really look forward to the day when a 40,000 seat stadium is on campus. It will happen but when is the question.

As Big said, a stadium is not part of the short term sports complex, though a new arena for basketball is, and the Roadrunners will play games in the Alamodome.

I wouldn't be in favor of this if the team weren't using the Alamodome. That place needs a tenant to justify its continued existence.

I saw on the news where they had the football helmet. Is that the actual helmet they are going to use? If so it was pretty nice. I would imagine the uniforms will be also judging from the helmet alone. Also im just guessing that they are going to join the Southland Conference, but I've heard rumors of DI? Does anyone know for sure?
