Your grass is currently hibernating. Hopefully you put down fertilizer in October and do it again somewhere around March or April and it'll be back to green. Unless of course this drought holds out and the temps stay high..

My used to be green grass is now brown hay. Crunches when you walk on it. If it ever rains again, it may go back to green or close to it. Water does make a big difference, except in the winter. Winter tends to make the grass less green and more brown.

You can do overseeding with northern grasses, like bluegrass. Just throw the seed on top of your St. Augustine in the fall and it will take over when the local grass dies back for the winter. Northern grasses can't stand the heat of the warm season, so it will be easy for your St. Augustine to crowd them out when spring weather arrives again.

Default Pre-emergent herbicide,

Scott's Turf Builder with crabgrass preventer. Also, Home Depot stocks a crabgrass herbicide which can be applied with a hose sprayer specifically made for crabgrass, but only- works on very young, growing weeds eary in the spring.
