Default Spay/neuter laws??

I heard a rumor that SA may be passing a spay and neuter law, is there any truth to this? I hope so ,it's a small step in the right direction to end overpopulation, although the effects will not appear immediately, eventually there would be a decrease in strays, puppy mills , etc YAY!!!!!

Like all laws, it comes down to enforcement. We'll see.

I think this is the new law you're looking for.

Intact dog permit to go into effect Jan. 1, 2009

Where I used to live, everyone had to pay to get their dogs licensed; those who chose not to spay/neuter paid about $30 more. I volunteered at the Humane Society there. They also did the licensing for the area and used that revenue for various services at the shelter. I don't know if I agree with normal licensing being free here (only charging those who leave the animals intact). Those who aren't going to license their spayed/neutered animals still probably won't license them just because it is free. People who would license them anyway probably would be willing to pay a nominal fee of $5 or $10; that $$ could be used for care of the animals in the shelter. I teach in Edgewood and none of my students have their dogs spayed/neutered, nor do they have them licensed. There are so many dogs running loose, so many dogs chained up... I talk to my kids about all of this, but anything they say to their parens falls on deaf ears. I wish laws like this would make an impact, but I am afraid they won't impact where they are needed.

It also unfortunately won't do much about puppy mills. When people stop buying dogs from pet stores like Petland, from people selling dogs on the side of the rode, or at pet "shows" like they have at Live Oak Civic Center, etc., THAT could eventually reduce/eliminate puppy mills.

good post buffy! The buyers are the ones creating the major problem. There are so many dogs out there in rescues and at the pound. People don't need a "designer dog" or any of that crap. I'll never understand why anyone would want to be like paris hilton.
here is where I found two of mine: Petfinder.com

So if I am responsible pet owner, I can no longer decide for my indoor pet(outdoor-leash only) to spay/ neuter or not to? For the record, my dachshund is neutered(see profile pic for Oscar) and we have taken in 4 stray cats that we have spayed, but the government already has plenty of regulation, could they please step off the pet thing?

This is a San Antonio law and if you read it, you can keep your dog as-is, but have to pay $50. I don't know how it is in SW Ohio, but there's a serious issue of responsibility here in SA. I'm also against the government butting in where they shouldn't, but a LOT of people here have responsibility issues ranging from children to animals to driving drink and plenty more.

We have no laws governing spay/neuter with the exception of purchasing from a shelter as those animals will be spayed or neutered.

As a taxpayer in San Antonio, I'm pleased that city government has given its Animal Control staff a new enforcement tool to curb irresponsible pet breeding and a new source of revenue that won't be coming out of my wallet.

I appreciate it too. Too bad it doesn't happen very often, though..
