EXAMPLE: How do you think HEB pays for those fatty mobiles? Mark up on what other people pay for normal items, thank goodness I dont shop there anymore.
Not to mention health care, transportation and all other sects that will raise their prices to accomodate....

So, what you're saying is, us fatties are going to save this economy.
Pass the salt, please!

It is disgusting and disturbing, there are people LITERALLY starving. Any of us could take a plane ride to nearly any corner of Africa and see people who are simply not ingesting enough calories.
Better yet, there are people in our city who dont have enough to eat. Their kids are in breakfast programs at public school, yet there are people a short drive away who ingest enough calories a day for 2 people.
Then, oh then, the people on their "diets". Please, it is a lifestyle.

I do my part, I eat locally was opposed to buying beef that was raised and fed in Africa. Raised on their land and fed their grains (that could have been used to feed their people).
Or buying produce from Mexico, again, I purchase locally instead of taking food from the mouths of natives.

And the majority of SA is eating beef raised and fed in Africa? Really? And you have first hand knowledge of this how?

Why are rainforests used to raise cattle for beef? Basically because the land is cheap and poor countries are willing to sell it. Companies move in and clear the rainforest. They do this using a technique called slash and burn agriculture. On a large scale, this type of forestry practice is devastating. Large tracts of land are burned and grasses are grown on what is now pasture. Then cattle graze on the land. After only a couple years the nutrients are so depleted and the soil is so compacted from grazing that the land is no longer valuable even for this very low end purpose. Unfortunately in this case, the forest cannot regrow. There is no surrounding forest to replant and repopulate the land. The land has been significantly damaged from growing only grasses and from having cattle trample it. The nutrients have also been lost from the soil. The nutrients in rainforests are all held within the plants and animals themselves. When the rainforest burns these nutrients go into the soil. Then they go into the plants that the cattle eat. The cattle are then removed from the land and killed, thus removing the nutrients from the land.

Anyway, the basic answer is that the people of SA could do a much better job of getting of this list next year. Many will benefit.

Back in the early 90s, Africa, as starved as they were, REJECTED the importation of millions of pounds of American beef and corn because of the way we engineer food to make them bigger and last longer. Interesting concept, they would rather starve to death than eat our foods that are made with corn byproducts.
I think the high fructose corn syrup is one of the leading reasons why there's such an obesity problem here. I'm no expert, but when we started seeing cheap by products like corn syrup created in order to mass produce more American foods three decades ago, it's no surprise the obesity problem cropped up at about the same time.
"A 2007 study fed rats a diet high in fat and HFCS and kept them relatively sedentary for 16 weeks in an attempt to emulate the diet and lifestyle of many Americans.[33] The rats were not forced to eat, but were able to eat as much as they wanted; they consumed a large amount of food, suggesting that fructose suppresses the sensation of fullness. Within four weeks, the rats showed early signs of fatty liver disease and type II diabetes"
But the real question is...sedentary for 16 weeks?! Sounds like me working hard

yes....I think you made a detour to another continent and another topic that isn't directly related to WHY SA is on this list. Thanks for bringing back on topic.
Personally...just because SA is on the list doesn't make any other city/town/community less likely to have this problem. Causes of obesity can be attributed to many things.

Lol...yea this thread went way in left field all the sudden.... The reason San Antonio is so fat is because of all the Mexican food, that's the reason.
