Default KB stater homes - Enclave at Lakeside

KB Home Community - Enclave at Lakeside - San Antonio, TX

I have read on these forums about KB's higher end houses but nothing on starter/lower price homes from them. Would great appreciate any thoughts and opinions on this matter. I am a first time buyer.

Thanks.

That's because they have developed quite a negative reputation around here. I think that there are some folks that are happy with their KB starter home though. Hope you get some honest responses.

I recommend you check some areas in the Southwest part of town that have starter homes by several different builders. Areas to check are Medina Base Road just inside Loop 410 and the area bounded by Loop 1604 to the West, Hunt Lane to the East, Hwy 90 to the South, and Potranco to the North. Take notes on what you like and don't like, check the builder's web site for pricing, and then do some investigations on the internet using Google searches.

Have you considered a pre-existing home in the price range you are working with??? It might be a thought since you could have some knowledge of the neighborhood's direction and the quality of the builder. Not to mention, buying a new home gets very expensive when you start adding all the "gotta's" to the immediate cost...window coverings, sod, H20 softner, etc.

You have the ability to see who you have in the neighborhood when you buy an existing home...and get to bargin with the seller as well. Just a thought, but either way, congratulations on your investment...you will be glad to put that money into your pocket each month vs your landlords!

I have to agree with Paka. With the recent local real estate reports, SA has not avoided the market slow down. That being said, it's turning around to be more of a buyers market again. You're buying at a good time. Good luck.

our first home was a kb starter home for us --- it was in their mid-level at the time, the classic series --- we were in our home for 11years and honestly, we never had any problems with it, at all --- we were very active in the build process, we were out there everyday and we kept on top of things that needed fixing/repairing --- when we sold our home the inspector, who was hired by the buyers, said that he was very impressed with the home, no major problems ... the a/c unit was still in excellent shape, the water heater was fine, everything ---

i know there are kb haters out there but we had a very good experience and the home served us well for all those years ---

i would recommend hiring your own private inspector during the build process to give you a little peace of mind, someone working for you, not for the builder --- it'll cost you apx $500 for 3 inspections but it is well worth it ---

We bought a KB starter home, and it sucked. We had nothing but problems with it. They actually left a hole in our roof. When they came to fix it, all they did was paint over the hole (We thought they had gone up and repaired the problem). The craftmanship of the home was pretty poor. During our walk throught the contractor told us, what did you expect look at what your paying for.
My neighbors also had lots of similar probelms with their homes. We also had a problem wiht our escrow account, which caused us to have to pay double the mortgage about a year after we moved in. I know this happened to other people, who had "bad loan deals. Unfortunately the neighborhood went south and became section 8. Lots of people were losing their homes, and HUD was moving families in. WE got out, and consider myself very lucky, and much the wiser. I've also met some people that have enjoyed the KB expereince. I just wanted to share ours with you. Good luck.
