Hate groups in the area....
Hi there,
My husband and I are considering a move to the San Antonio area. We are particularly interested in Canyon Lake. It looks beautiful! While google-ing the area on the web, an FBI list of active hate groups in the U.S. came up as one of the search results....and it listed something called the "Knights of the White Kamellia KKK" as active in that area (as well as in Austin).
It also listed these other groups as active in the S.A. and Austin areas:
Austin: Knights of the White Kamellia
Austin: National Alliance
Austin: World Church of the Creator
Canyon Lake: Knights of the White Kamellia
San Antonio: National Socialist White People's Party
I have no idea if this is old or new info...or if this is something that so few people are involved in that it doesn't have any impact. I was just curious if there is a lot of activity from groups like this in the area. If I'm black, Jewish, or Hispanic am I going to have a problem? I don't mean to insult anyone - I just need to be enlightened either way as I've never been to this area - or TX - and the ideals of these groups don't mesh with my beliefs.
Thanks in advance for any info.!

Well, I'm white, non-Hispanic, so I may not be a trustworthy source, but I don't think they are very active here. Life is pretty laid-back in San Antonio, and I don't witness much hating going on. Of course, I don't get out much, either! Between work, church, and my son's school activities, we stay pretty busy! I hope the others don't come on here and post a bunch of info stating otherwise--only because I hope it's not happening.

I'm interested as well about this info.....
My husband and I are also planning on moving with our children to this area, and the last thing i want to here is this.
I live in Pa and the people here are like that, and I have had enough, the problem here is if your not a local with no teeth these small minded fools, want to know nothing so......With that being said I sure hope this isn't true....

Every city has a few crackpots. I'd be willing to bet this is more of a beer-swillin' social club, with about 4 members operating out of a trailer park . Seriously though, San Antonio is the last place you're going to see any hate crimes, it's VERY laidback here, and I've never seen or heard about any hate crimes or in-your-face blatant racism here (I'm white, but still, I get around). I wouldn't give it a second thought.

I really think that you need to take whatever you read with a grain of salt.
Are there gangs, hate groups, child molesters, witches and warlocks, sexual deviates in Austin, San Antonio or Canyon Lake...probably. But I really think that they are where you live NOW too, and that IF you are so desiring of hooking up with others of your point of view, the internet is the place folks post. I believe that this may be WHY you are finding such information when searching.
I have been raised and lived much of my life in this area ( and I am over 50 yrs old) and have NEVER seen an incident of anything that would qualify as such. Have I heard of a hate crime in our area...no. Do we have a VERY desversified group of folks living in these areas due to jobs, military folks (who often marry from other races/countries) and students...YES.
You know, I could appreciate this question more if you found INCIDENT of sometype that would qualify, but I doubt that you will given the very friendly, blending nature of folks from South Texas.
Just because I know folks from PA who live in small, rural communities with NO blacks and NO hispanics and prefer that life does not mean that I should consider everyone from PA a threat just because you are from there to does it? OF COURSE NOT!!!
Please, come to Texas, see the wonderful life we live together in harmony and enjoy the natural beauty of both our state and our people towards one another. Why do you think they sell a bumper sticker here that says "I was not born in Texas but I got here as soon as I could"???

There are wackos like that all over the U.S., but like googie said, it's more than likely a beer swillin' social club operating out of a trailer park. I saw on the site there are hate groups all over Texas, but interestingly there is no information to back up how large these groups are or exactly where they are located. I live in a suburb of Fort Worth and I have never seen any behavior that would indicate these groups are in my area.
If I were you I wouldn't worry in the least. San Antonio is not only a beautiful city, it's very progressive and full of great people. Texas is a great state.

Welcome to SA! I would not worry so much about these hate groups. I would worry more about the "small mindedness" that you mention you are experiencing in PA. You are going to get that everywhere, but especially in Southern cultures (like TX).

Very interesting, we have a ton of mixed race couples and children in our area and I've not seen any racism problems. Back in the '90's I moved to rural DC next to a county called Fredericksburg. Turns out Fredericksburg had the highest concentration of KKK in the nation. They must have either hidden it really well or lived in the far outskirts since I never met anyone who saw any evidence of it.

My parents have lived in San Antonio for 36 years and this was news to them. They've never heard of any hate crime incident and neither have I. As was mentioned above, there are crackpots and wackos throughout the US so you need to take that bit of negative information with a grain of salt.
