I could careless about the rodeo period. It just makes me mad that the AT&T Center is used up for the month of February, when it could be reeling in good entertainment. And before people start responding with all of the great country acts, trust me I could careless about them as well.

I avoid the rodeo at ALL cost (not because I object to anything that goes on at the rodeo, but because it is historically the SH%$^# weather we put up with all year that occurs at the same time).

So have that you darn rodeo...I'm of to the South Eastern Caribbean this year (south western last year) to cruise from island to island with a Drink of the Day in hand and develop the BEST damn tan I can during the two weeks of REALLY bad weather (why DOES it always happen during rodeo week???) and return to SA relaxed, happy, having manged to miss the WORST if the mountain cedar season and with a GREAT base tan for the summer pool season!!!

I'll show them!!! LOL
Maybe we can get our own little group booked for next year...have NO idea what you are missing! CDF cruise to avoid rodep/mountain Cedar/lousy weather next year at rodeo time????? Takers????? Great way to go, enjoy, and not have to worry about "who is driving" so we can all enjoy without getting arrested for drinking and driving.

I hope we get some good soaking rains then. If not, I hope that they don't hang that stupid rain rock during fiesta. Enjoy your trip

[quote=TX_AGGIE13;7157661]Well, again I wish you well, but I can tell you anti rodeo in Texas is never gonna happen... Maybe to a remote few, but not in general. The rodeos are only going to get bigger and bigger over the years as well. [quote]
Even out west, I don't see them going away. There's a huge one in Puyallup (SE suburb of Seattle / Tacoma) every year that keeps on growing. No protesters either. I enjoyed going to a small one over in Wyoming some time back too. It was in a really small town and there might've been room for maybe 500 seats but it was a great time.

Lol...well, good luck with that! I can't wait for it though, I got chutte seats, snake skin boots, leather chapps, and I hope to find a nice rare steak after the great event! No offense to you and your beliefs, but if your preachin anti rodeo to TEXANS!?!?...lol...you sure came to the wrong place. It's cultural down here, and we ranchers like it!
Weren't you the guy grilling folks for spending their hard earned money on landscaping?

Chute seats, snake boots, leather chaps, and a nice rare steak - set you out over a grand for one evening-right?

how you can do that with the knowledge that some people are losing their jobs, I'll never know.

As for the rodeo - I am all for it. Usually go three times or so each year and really enjoy myself - weather permitting. I think that this is a quite a boon for San Antonio, and wish them nothing but the best.

If you don't like the rodeo in your town, change towns. Last I checked, it's still not San Antonio, CA.

I agree with you, except that the rodeo is HUGE in CA. Maybe one of the New England states?

What about the Gay Rodeo? They encourage a healthy respect and the well treatment of animals!

The national rodeo circuit in San Antonio, Dallas, Ok City, Denver, California, Wyoming, Montana.........yada yada is big business. San Antonio is not the place to pick a fight about animal cruelty. You might want to contact the American Professional Rodeo Association....among countless other rodeo associations across this country if you want to truly make a difference. Heck...Australia even has humongous rodeos....so what to do about them Aussies?

Seriously....activism is not a bad thing....but to make it effective, it needs to be organized....not just a random community slam session.

If you truly want to address animal cruelty, then you might want to check into the underground problems like rampant **** fights, poaching and old fashioned bull fights, dog fights etc... that take place across the country illegally. THAT would be a great place to start.

If you really look at our society as a whole, we're not perfect....and we have those bad apples that abuse animals beyond our imaginations....but compared to what happens in some third world countries, it's Western civilizations that have helped stop the slaughter and cruelty of many species of animals. That doesn't give us a pass to overlook certain activities as being cruel....but there are bigger fish to fry....as in criminally inhumane behavior.....not little old San Antonio's two week rumble with the rodeo circuit!

My dad's side of the family is very urban, as am I, but my mom's side of the family is all ranchers of sorts. We always spent 4th of July in Rocksprings w/ all of her family at my great-grandparents house, and one of the highlights of the weekend was the rodeo. Way I see it (from what I've seen and learned from my family), you use skills on the ranch to do what you gotta do, and the rodeo is simply a competition of who's the best at doing what they do.

If you work a ranch, and one of your calfs run off you go rope him up so that you can bring him back- it's not like you throw him into a ditch somewhere to rot, geez. Rodeo's no different.

Now, if someone is using mal-practice, that's different and that is bad, but that doesn't mean that the sport itself is bad.

Very good post. I personally don't go to the SA Rodeo, I live on a ranch and see a 'rodeo' everyday. It is the furtherest thing from animal cruelty .
