Go to the County Tax Assessor's office - they'll have a form for you to fill out, and then they'll issue new plates. They WILL charge ya a coupla bucks, I think....so file that as part of your insurance claim if it's covered.

Once and for all, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has tightened down the bolts on auto license plates.
Now, Texas cars must have a second plate on the front bumper.
Yes, on the bumper.
No, not in the windshield.
No, not in the glove box to show officers when you get stopped.

That's a bummer. I think most TX residents would sacrifice the little "public safety" they get from having front license plates in order to not have to look at ugly front plates every time they drive.

What does it matter? Jeez, most countries and a lot of states require front license plates. I think it was ridiculous that people were allowed to keep them in their windshield, and many getting away with not having them displayed at all.

Just put the frigging thing on the front bumper and forget about it!

I have a 2010 Camaro, and refuse to drill my front bumper. I've had numerous police officers drive by me on the road and give me thumbs up.

On the other hand, my wife was ticketed this week for no front plate by a constable in Converse. Odd though, the citation states "Failure to display license". No violation number or anything. Could be interpreted many ways

We just bought a used car that also does not have a place to put a front plate. DH is having problems getting it on base depending on how stringent the guards are being. I guess we'll have to make it over to the mechanic at some point to put it on and hope it's a nominal fee.

Yes, Texas law does requires vehicles here to have a license plate displayed, and now that means permanently mounted to the front bumper, per Sec 502.404 of the Texas Transportation Code. Failure to do so can result in a fine up to $200.

The gate guards on base can and do scrutinize vehicles coming on base, and have been known to not allow entry to those with expired registrations and inspections.

The good news is you can buy a plate mounting kit at Walmart or any auto parts store. They simply screw or bolt into the front bumper, a job that takes all of a few minutes to complete.

Cheers! M2

The state of Texas requires that your vehicle display two license plates, one in the front and one in the rear. for the front, you are allowed to put it in the windshield so in your case you don't need to drill holes in your front bumper.

I've heard that putting it in your windshield actually draws attention to the fact that you have not properly mounted a front plate, so I keep mine in the trunk My car's not drilled for one and I won't mutilate it until there is a compelling reason to do so. A buddy of mine has an s5 and he has a mount that comes up from underneath the bumper and doesn't require any drilling.
