Don't know about you guys, but in north san antonio, the moon looks huge! Never seen it this close before.

How come pictures of the moon NEVER come out good

yup, we just came in from outside and i actually pointed the moon out to my neighbor and to dh --- it is soooo bright and huge...really prettyl!!!

Mostly because the auto light metering in your camera is over exposing and blowing out the moon. This is because it is averaging the very light spot (the moon) with the black around it.

You really want your camera to correctly expose the moon, and and not care about the black space around it. You could use spot metering on a better camera, or just bump down the exposure compensation a few stops until the pictures looks good.

Also if you may need to put the camera on a tri-pod to prevent motion blur, depending on how fast your lens is, and the ISO setting.

So I got inspired to go out a get a shot...

Taken with a 135mm lens, and then cropped severely to make it bigger... The Moon is big, but not that big

Spot Metering, and two stops exposure correction. Hand held, but set at 400 ISO
