Come on CR, cheer up...it's a special day to others...no need to take over the thread with doom and gloom! Make the best of it!

I think this year, our kid is going with the sitter, and we are going to cook together at home. It will be nice to have the house all to our selves!
I think your plans sound very nice.

Sorry 'bout the gloom.

I have just found that trying to fight the "masses" is just too stressful.

Hubby and I spent time this weekend working out Saturday morning, doing lunch at Bin555, wine tasting and liquor buying at Joe Saglimbenis and then a movie at the Bijou followed by dinner at home.

That will probably do for our valentines day, just a bit early.

Au contraire! It isn't booked solid,.. if you don't mind having a Valentine's DAY meal (not dinner). We're booked at 1PM and I was told that they had openings between 12noon - 2:15PM.

This post made me laugh...very true and on point!

We avoid restaurants around certain holidays because the service, atmosphere and food are usually lacking compared to dining on a non-holiday.

We will be heading to our lakehouse in Horseshoe Bay. Hopefully we will be alone in company!

"Bah! Humbug!"

Waistaff that can't wait to leave or want to turn their tables as fast as possible or sell you the most expensive bottle of wine.

Reservations only or a long wait.

Whiny housewives insisting on being wined and dined or young couples blowing their wad on percieved elegance...

Busy kitchen and other staff.

Why not try another day in the next two weeks or so?

Some of my favs:

-Ruth's Chris in Downtown. It's not anywhere near the Riverwalk and if you are at a hotel in downtown, they offer a free shuttle. I've always been happy with the food and the service.
-Fleming's at the Quarry, chain restaurant with good wine selections. Can get crowded.
-Grey Moss Inn in Grey Forest, near Helotes. VERY out of the way, you almost miss it driving by. Huge wine list (err book actually) and its not very crowded the few times I've been. Really good place to sit outside if the weather is nice. Probably my favorite spot in town for a good all around nice place to go.
-Wild Fish -San Antonio Hotel. Over off 1604 and Huebner. Its a bit loud but the food is really good.
-Paloma Blanca. Alamo Heights off Broadway. Pretty nice mexican food restaurant.

Places I haven't been to, but heard about:

-The Tower of the Americas. Yeah I know, cliche for the city but kinda hard to beat the view.
-The Lodge San Antonio Hotel
-Morton's
-Bohanan's
-Le Reve

I like all of your recs. I LOOOOVE Ruth Chris. That place has great steaks and you can't go wrong there. Never been to Mortons but i'd love to try. Bohanan's is great!

I had never looked at Grey Moss Inn's website before. They use lots of "random" quotation marks, and that makes it "impossible" for me to read what it is they're trying to "say" because I get so "distracted".

Bohanon's is the name of a nursing home in my college town. Needless to say a restaurant called Bohanan's doesn't sound all that appetizing to me!

I would try Lorenzo's in the medical center area. Its a hole in the wall italian place but the owner makes the best mannicott (sp)i ever had next to my exs italian father... They also have their own wine specific for Valentines days a nice romantic treat. My husband and I purchased the Riesling and it was delicious with our meal. The owner is very sweet and accommodating. One Valentines my husband and i forgot to make our reservation he managed to squeeze us in . It is very small i will tell you that now. But its a great romantic little spot for valentines day or not. My husband and I usually go there for our anniversary or Valentines
