My family and I are trying to move to SA from Minnesota. My husband is in banking. He has one more year of schooling for his BA in Commercial Banking. He flew down there 2 weeks ago for an interview with a recruiting agency. They had nothing at this time but told him that he should not have a problem finding anything. It is nerve racking sitting here and waiting. He was told that SA is not being hit as hard as the rest of the country as far as jobs go. Do you tend to agree. Any advice for us? Thank you!

I work in Commercial Lending here in San Antonio and the Job Market is slim. There are jobs but they aren't falling off the trees. Entry level jobs are easier to come by. Mid level and high level jobs are very hard to find.

While San Antonio has weathered the down turn much better than much of the United States - the banking industry has been hit very hard. It started on the consumer side, but even small business and commercial lending has slowed dramatically.

Good luck!

Not knowing what's going on in your area, we can't really say it's any better here than where you are. We're getting hit just like everyone else.....and worse...it seems like many are hearing the same story as you are ...that Texas and SA are fairing better than other areas. That's only sending more unemployed people here and the flood plain is leveling out everywhere.

We have a family friend in mid management at Wachovia that was laid off right before Christmas....and with a baby on the way! That was in Austin....they have feelers out all over the state and still no luck.....and worse...high priced COBRA that is about to run out.

Wish I could share more positive news! Good luck!

Another thing to keep in mind - Wachovia and WaMu both had centers here that were impacted by the mergers that occured late last year. This has flooded the market with folks in all areas (including commercial/small business) of the banking field here in San Antonio. Despite what the local paper reported - I know that hundreds of folks were laid off from these banks. The paper declared no lay offs because both banks are still hiring...but they are replacing mid level jobs with entry level. Lots of folks making good money are being laid off by WaMu and Wachovia here in our "recession proof" town.
