JOBS!

1000+ from USAA

Quote:
A USAA spokesman says as a result of the consolidation as well as new job growth, the company is expected to add more than 1,000 new positions in the Alamo City. The company has a massive headquarters campus located near the South Texas Medical Center in San Antonio.
USAA to add 1,000 jobs in San Antonio in wake of consolidation - San Antonio Business Journal:

500 from The Scooter Store

Quote:
The Scooter Store has narrowed its search for expansion space to accommodate 500 or more new jobs to New Braunfels, San Antonio or San Marcos, its president, Doug Harrison, said this week.
Scooter Store eyes New Braunfels, S.A., San Marcos (http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/Scooter_Store_job_growth_focused_on_New_Braunfels_ San_Antonio_San_Marcos.html - broken link)

IT is nice to see the area to continue to grow its job base. These jobs plus brac are a great bright spot in a weak economy.

The USAA thing is probably not actually going to be 1000, more like 750 if no one relocates from those shutdown offices (not likely). There's another thread that gets into that.. I think the one about the recent USAA bonus (13.5%)

What type of positions are going to be available and does San Antonio have the talent and workforce to support their needs or do you think that people will be moving to San Antonio to take these jobs?

I assume that USAA is looking for finance majors?

There is a video in the thread "building a more prosperous San Antonio" where a local professor poses the question, "what type of industry/job skills should we be preparing young San Antonians for"

Does San Antonio have talent for it's own companies already HQ here, hmm? With a larger college population than Austin, San Antonio has a strong workforce and pool of talent to tap into. San Antonio is a white collar town.

I work for a large global consulting firm in SA and the majority of the workforce are MBA types. Though not scientifically accurate, I think about half are born and raised here in SA and the other half are Chicago/Denver/California/Seattle/INDIA! etc...transplants.

Admittedly I am in the minority as one of the few who do not posses a graduate degree of some sort, and I am from SA. Many of my colleagues who work in similiar roles have advanced degrees but not all of them necessarily are great workers, have good relation skills, and a clear understanding of mobilization and work structure from an operational standpoint. Many of them graduated and went straight into the company having never had much work experience in much of the work they are required to consult on (ie call center, hr functions) therefore they tend to struggle more than workers like myself who have the work experience. A fancy degree from a high profile university sometimes can only get you thru the door, not necessarily make for a productive and knowledgeable employee.

I do believe SA has the talent to fulfill many types of jobs, not just manual labor ones. (I consider myself proof of that.)

Don't forget about the amazing pool of talent, ability and diversity coming out of/retiring from the military. This tends to be a very educated, motivated, big-picture group (regardless of branch or rank!!) and most are in their prime when they retire (if they do so at "20" or even "30") and San Antonio is fortunate when they can hang on to them.

Default USAA moves 240 jobs to SA!

Sacramento and Norfolk's loss is our gain...

USAA is moving hundreds of jobs to San Antonio - San Antonio Business Journal:

Folks get college degrees so they don't have to work in a call center. A college degree does not guarantee success, but you're certainly better off with one. Advice to the young folks out there...get the FANCIEST degree from the HIGHEST profile university possible.

I agree that an advanced degree from a good school is a step in the right and best direction - but I've also seen plenty of FANCY degrees from the HIGHEST profile schools get boxed up and escorted out the door.

correction:
USAA relocating/buying out 1100 employees in other cities. 250-1000 will be relocated here. this is not a sign of strength and nothing to be excited about. this also means no new hirings here in SA, only relocations. once relocated, they will probably get 6 months before they are terminated as well, as per USAA standard operating procedure.
