Does it take THAT much water to use the hose? (Honestly asking, I'm a TOTAL novice!) I was JUST trying to figure out if I wanna attempt a raised bed this year (I know, I'd need to hurry up!), but if it's gonna cost me more in water than it would to just buy the darned produce at the store......

No way Jules! I'm doing container gardening, and last year it wasn't that bad. Though, with little one liking to pick "flowers"...I didn't get much produce! So, this year he has his strawberry plant, his tomato plant, etc. I keep telling him, DON'T PICK THE FLOWERS! So, I would do it...make it your hobby for the summer.

My backyard looks like a mess right now. I need to clean it up and it will be really nice. We also need to get our mulch in...hello hubby!!! Has anyone tried that mulch from Scotts that says "prevents weeds"? I wanted to know if it's worth the extra $$$ and if it really works?

Go to Kellers Materials over on 410 between Rigsby and Houston street and get some raised bed / container mix to fill it with. They have some pretty good compost there too. Fannicks Garden Center is the place to go in our neighborhood for your plants and ammendments. You need to put in your plants about the 2nd or 3rd week of March. Here's a thought if you live on base. Do they have a community garden? If not, why the H*ll don't they. Go and tell them to ask the president for some stimulus money to build a nice big community garden for those living on base. That would would be the best use of stimulus money I can think of.
that is a REALLY good idea! yes we do live on base, but it's Brooks City-Base, and the city of SA owns it, not the military.

My tomato plants arrived late last week, but the soil in the garden is too wet for planting. Since we're supposed to have dry weather all week, they'll go into the ground by the end of the week.

Got one of those "Topsy Turvy" tomato hangers and some plants this morning at HEB Plus...already planted it and have it hanging from the oak tree out back where it will get lots of sun.

I am attending the "Sq Ft Gardening" class this Tuesday nite from NSISD Cont Ed...excited to try it out!

I was going to get one of those upside down tomato hangers but opted for the old boring pot instead. I would love to hear how it works out for you.

We planted strawberries also but our sweet little doggie decided to dig in the pot. I would love to have fresh stawberries, the ones at the store make me nervous. I always have to be so careful with them because a lot of them are fuzzy and mushy on the bottom.

Will keep you posted...evidently you can plant the strawberries in hanging baskets as well if your doggie wants to dig them. Me, I am afraid of them attracting ants if we plant them in the ground.

That is what we did! Actually, I planted them in the pot and my husband hung them on a shepard's hook about 1-2 feet off the ground. Doggie knocked it down and proceeded to make a mess. We will try again and just hang them much higher.

Last time I grew strawberries, I bought 4 plants and got a grand total of 2 berries. I haven't planted strawberries since.
