The wrong is that the stuff is stolen and in buying stolen stuff, you're also stealing because it's taking profits from some retail store, which in turn causes higher prices, people losing their jobs, etc.

Perhaps you have never heard of anyone being killed over a purse....but I have. I know someone who got his head knocked off for selling rip off purses and burned DVDs because his "competition" at the flea market felt threatened by the quality of his "product." Hmmmm....sounds strangely familiar to that other illegal trade that was mentioned in your post. Stealing is stealing plain and simple. I would venture to say cops arent putting small timers behind bars. Im sure they are going after the ones trafficking the most and who are making "real" profit from stolen stuff.

Did this happen in Iran? That sounds more like middle eastern justice.

Being that you seem to have a strong sense of morality about this, why is it that you didn't turn this person in to the police? Maybe he wouldn't have met an early demise.

Think about it for a minute. You said that someone got their head chopped off for setting prices too low or bootlegging things. You'd think that in the US the media, which feeds off certain kinds of stories, would jump all over that kind of thing. Now let's think back to stories like that hitting the news. Nothing? Must not have happened here... but there are a couple of regions of the world where people tend to do things like that. I'll be you can't guess where? (hint: the Chinese normally just execute them).

Im certain that i am not the only one who has known people who have less than reputable lifestyles. Im not going to explain myself for something that happened quite some time ago, when I personally was much younger and my own morals and values werent exactly "developed."
