Express-News To Cut 135 Jobs - San Antonio Jobs News Story - KSAT San Antonio

Express-News To Cut 135 Jobs

SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Express-News announced Wednesday that it will cut its staff by 15 percent and leave dozens of jobs unfilled as the newspaper battles the slump that has pummeled it and other dailies across the country.

Wage and hiring freezes, buyouts and smaller job cuts have not been enough to offset the continuing revenue shortfall at the Hearst Corp.-owned newspaper, said Publisher Thomas Stephenson. The newspaper will eliminate 135 jobs and leave 30 open positions unfilled.
I hate to see this happen. We need local journalists asking questions to keep the politicians honest.

MySA also has the story at Express-News to cut staff 15 percent

That's too bad.
I know newspapers are having a problem competing with internet and other news sources.

Times are changing.

Printing is a dying business and ad sales are down
but I was able to renew my subscription with Texas Monthly
for less than half of what I've paid in the past...

I'll take the $ savings $!

I love reading online, but really have to have the printed paper, especially Sunday's paper. Like the new Kindles, etc... its just not the same for me as having a book in hand. I'm old fashioned I guess.

I was reading that newspapers might have a viable business model if they subsidize/bundle a kindle for long term subscribers.

Come on America, we need to support our newspapers.

GOOD!

The Express News is the WORST paper in Texas. I stopped supporting it YEARS ago when the paper supported Bush's second term for president. And of course (no shock) supported the out of touch senile McCain.

The Express News has always been a Republican rag in San Antonio. It should just tank already.

I only read the San Antonio Current.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. To judge a newspaper based on it's presidential picks is ludicrous. The majority of the selections that the Express has supported are progressive.

To call the Express News a "Republican rag" ignores all of the articles written by Carlos Guerra or the cartoons by John Branch. Most of its investigative articles such as those on tree preservation in SA are far from "neo-con" territory.

To only read the Current does not allow oneself the full acquisition of knowledge. One source of news is very dangerous, whether it be liberal or conservative. I also read the Current, but I also read the Express and other newspapers.

As a book my kid has says, "just because you are [correct], doesn't always mean the other person is wrong."
