A 32-minute “Dawn at the Alamo” ceremony honoring the nearly fallen Alamo defenders and some 600 Mexican troops who were killed or wounded also had a tone of reconciliation, with the reading of the Prayer of St. Francis in English and Spanish.

Phil Collins, the former music entertainer and Alamo devotee, read the English version of the prayer. Bob Benavides, chairman of the San Antonio Living History Association read the Spanish version.

“It is in dying that we are born to eternal life,” Collins said.
