Just curious to see if anyone knows of any wineries within driving distance of San Antonio. Also, where's the best place in town to buy wine by the bottle?
I'm not happy with the local liquor store, and the H-E-B has a decent selection but the mark up is astronomical....

Thanks in advance!

Warren,

The Hill country is full of wineries - Fredericksburg has a good one in particular. Don't expect Napa valley, as these are very much proletariat wineries, but they all seem to make rather good sherry. Probably the best in the area

If you are looking for a moderately good selection of affordable wine, I would reccomend Costco. It is an excellent place to explore wines at a good price - and perhaps pick up $500 worth of food and consumer electronics while you are shopping.

Thanks Ron. I'll check it out. Whenever the sun decides to come out my wife and I will head up to Fredericksburg. As for Costco, the selection isn't that bad. But I'm looking for a extremely diverse selection. I hear ya on the $500 price tag. I can never leave that place without spending too much. lol

About 30 years ago I went on a vacation to SA with my parents and I went on a tour of the Jose Antonio Navarro house, which is a series of buildings built around a courtyard. The tour guide showed us some grape vines in the back of the courtyard and explained how in Navarro's day there had been a number of Texas vineyards. I commented, "Gee, that would be a good thing for people to try here again." Little did I know....

Warren FF, have you checked out the selection at HEB Central Market? I don't know what the SA one is like, but the selection is pretty good in Austin.
