Yup - good points. I've seen kids get a kick out of waving to the folks at the restaurants and stuff, too. Neat perspective of downtown, on the boats...

I would bring the whole family. Time is precious, spend as much as you can with your relatives before they leave.

The Riverwalk is gorgeous and perfectly safe for your children.

Then you have the other perspective: my 2 yr old on the riverwalk waving to all the folks in the boat, with the driver stopping long enough to have the boat full of tourists snap photos of her......she thinks she's a celebrity (it was a slow day on the Riverwalk)

It depends - are you planning on leaving the tourist zone to visit places like Sea World, the Botanical Gardens, the Zoo, or the McNay? Then yes. If you're planning on staying downtown, you can get by with the trolley, the occasional taxi ride, and walking.
