Be careful when you shop at HEB for that matter. I've seen plenty of stuff out of date there as well. I don't think it's a Dollar General exclusive, but thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for the reminder. I like it when grocery stores mark down bread/milk/etc. right before the expiration date. I wish more stores here did that. Often we use it quickly, or as in the case of bread, I freeze it. Because my last favorite grocery store did that (king Soopers), I am in the habit of checking exp. dates now. LOL

At HEB, when you find something expired and present it at the register, they'll give you an unexpired copy of that item for free.

I'm sure any store has trouble keeping shelves stocked with fresh merchandise. I've found expired stuff in alot of stores. I learned a long time ago to check dates where ever I shop. I did not know about HEB giving you an un-expired item if you found an expired item. I'm going digging from now on everytime I go to HEB. It could be a new way to save money.
Thanks for the heads up.

This thread is a good reminder. I admit I don't check everything because I assume that in a big chain, I wouldn't need to worry as much. Guess that is why people say what they do about assuming.

The Mrs Bairds bakery stores sell their almost expired bread really cheap, and I noticed HEB discounts their milk (the organic kind) when its within a day or two of expiring. I always stock up because this house goes thru milk quick.

This also applies to meat too. When I used to work at HEB there used to be a lady who used to do her shopping this way. She would bring her daughters to help her scan the store for expired items. Every once in a while the meat dept would slack off and she would come to the register with meat.

Expired canned goods, maybe even some frozen stuff, but meat!?!
Not sure saving a few bucks is worth whatever ailments that can cause!
