In all honesty, if I were to find the perfect place, I would buy it in this market, and accept the downside risks I've written about, but again, I'm not seeing any listings inside 410 that float my boat.
I didn't know that you were talking retirement money. I figured you'd taken care of that already. Where is your other money? The money that you control over and above some retirement fund? Doesn't sound like you make very much...so just guard what you have. I thought you had more...my bad. Good luck.

Enjoy your trip, SF is nice this time of year...Reno will probably still have some snow, right??? I have not been up that way in years, but LOVE Emerald beach up there.

Looking forward to my trip to Europe for 2 weeks in May...Tulip Festival here I come!!! Taking serious advantage of these "give them away" fares!
Did you take advantage of those fares I posted in OT? The fares are slowly creeping up, but the prices for my particular flight are still relatively cheap ($214 each way). However, a couple days later in May are up to almost $400 each way. When is the Tulip Festival? We're probably definitely going to London as a side trip, but it's not a definite definitely..
anyhow, back to the topic (sorta), watch the latest South Park episode to fully understand the problem. People knock the show, but that's usually from ignorance. A guy in my office is an über economics guy and had never watched the show until this episode and he said it was the most accurate explanation he's heard yet.

I've noticed that travel costs have been down this year too. I looked into booking my honeymoon in June around new year's, but didn't because I knew I'd be picking up a lot more miles with the last couple of trips between San Antonio and Seattle. Didn't get as many miles as I thought, and wound up booking it about three weeks ago and prices were actually a little lower than they were a few months ago.

Hotels haven't gone up at all this year (at least none I frequent). Rental cars... maybe a buck a day. Flights are still at or near capacity.

edit: been doing pretty well this spring. There are opportunities to be had.

No, but I sure enjoyed LOOKING at them!

I use a consolidator that has EXCELLENT rates and even watches them for you...tells you what the trends are and when to buy, as well as daily emails watching trips.

I got round trip, SA to Frankfurt traveling from SA to Dallas, Dallas nonstop to Frankfurt and same route for return travel for $531 total. It is the ROUTE I wanted (skipping Chicago) and on American. Can't complain at all!!! Oh, that INCLUDED my travel insurance for baggage issues, medical/dental emergencies and covered reasons to cancel all together.

Looking up the EXACT same flights on AA cost over $200 more roundtrip.

I HIGHLY recommend them!!

The Tulip festival is in Holland, here is a link. Since my girlfriend lives in Germany and her (and my) DH are SUCH sweethearts, she and I are going to do a girls siteseeing/shopping 2 weeks as our Mother's Day gifts from our sweeties!!! We will go to Poland (to the polish pottery factories) one weekend, Holland/Belgium/Amsterdam another weekend, and a couple days in Paris, as well as a Eurail pass for a M-Thur trip thru Austria, Switzerland & Budapest. DO look into the Eurail pass if you are going to go by train and extend your travels beyond Paris...they are MUCH cheaper buying here in the US before you go than waiting until you are there.
