Keep some Uncle Chris' Steak Seasoning in your pantry. That stuff makes okra taste good.

It's the Bolner's Fiesta brand....in the spices aisle at your friendly, local HEB.

I'll look for that next time I'm there. The extra seasoning salt and a second cooking uncovered and closer to the top of the oven made it a lot better. Only problem was my son, his GF, and the granddaughter blew us off. I was a little disappointed in that one.. more so for the obvious reason

and I've never seen the appeal of beets and I like a lot of the things that are pretty strong/unusual tasting like turnips, rhubarb, and artichokes.

If you don't want to invest 12-18 hours in a brisket.....take a brisket, put it in foil inside the baking pan.....pour one can of tomato sauce and one packet of Lipton onion soup mix over the meat, wrap the foil, bake at 300 for 2, 3, 4 hours...the longer it cooks the more tender it gets....but it is absolutely delicious.

I think I'll stick with the HEB brisket. It costs more, but they do a great job of it. The reason I tried it myself was I found an 8 lb brisket at the AR Super Target for only $6 because it had to be sold by Wednesday. I figured what the hell. I always wanted to try it and if I totally screwed up, the dogs would be über happy.

I bought a reduced pork tenderloin from them once, and took it home to make it for dinner. As soon as I got the plastic cut open and the slime started oozing out, the smell reached up and slapped me into next week, with a stop at my bathroom. It was horrifying. I will NEVER buy reduced meat again because that was some serious trauma.

You're missing out on that brisket....I have one in the freezer and I think I just talked myself into making it this week.

it was in a clear wrapper, so I could see that the color was still good. I also have an über (got that in two posts in a row here) sensitive nose, so I would've smelled anything rancid. Super Target is also very good about taking things back. I have returned clementines and donuts there with no questions asked. The clemenines were very dry inside and the donuts were the worst tasting donuts I've ever had in my life. I didn't even know it was possible for donuts to taste awful. The person doing returns even noticed the clementines didn't smell good. I don't know how my nose missed that one the first time. Another reason I like shopping there.

I like shopping there, too--I just leave the discounted meat for the others. Their produce section is so pretty....and the meat is good when it's fresh. There is no way I would have been physically able to take that meat back and ask for a cheerful refund. Dry heaves make me hard to understand.
