Melissa Ann, Prayers and healing thoughts headed your way for you and your family. Don't let those that choose not to believe diswade you in your faith. Each of us has the opportunity to believe, many dont. Don't allow yourself for a moment to question your faith based on others beliefs or question the power of prayer. God NEVER turns away from someone willing to seek his help!

It's yet to be proven that the 'power of prayer' does anything more than provide a mental pep-rally for those who buy into it.

If you want direction, YOU have to find it. Life (IMO) is about having the motivation to get the job done, finding success in doing it and having the hope that you can continue doing it year after year.

I'm sorry to hear that your family is having health issues. I wish nothing but better things for them. Recovering from something as serious as a stroke is big stuff. I've had my own family members go through this. You have my sympathy.

A solution to financial problems? Aside from that simply being a life issue, you can't pray for a windfall of magical money to fall from the sky. If you want to earn more, you're going to have to work more. That's the bottom line.

I don't say any of this in a mean-spirited way, but simply as an opinion from someone who's sick and tired of seeing people get backed into a corner (usually of their own creation) and fallback of 'the power of god, prayer, etc' as the crutch. If you spent less time wondering when god was going to give you your very own spiritual bail-out and more time figuring out a REALITY-BASED solution, you might already be moving forward.

Perhaps I'm too much of a realist for this thread, but it caught me off-guard and I felt the need to post. This is what happens when you watch Bill Maher's 'Religilious' the night before. Eek.

Yeah, the only factual part of that post was the first sentence.

You obviously have no faith, but realize that there are millions that truly realize the power of prayer, and have experienced it personally.

Someone posted asking for prayer and you used it as a pulpit for nothing more than spouting rhetoric. Moderator cut: off topic/personal

I kept the conversation clean, sympathetic and added my own personal opinion. You, kevcrawford, did not. If your own belief system is so fragile that you've got to respond immediately with this, then it's more than telling of the person behind the post.

And as for 'spouting rhetoric,' isn't that what organized religion has based itself on for thousands of years? I thought so too

The details of why a prayer request is or is not valid are not on-topic in local forums. Feel free to start a thread discussing that in the Religion and Philosophy forum and link back to it here. We're not discussing it in this local forum.

Regardless of your personal belief, a person was asking for support in a difficult time. I found it completely inspiring that she did not seemed phased in the least by your opinion or poor choice of exploiting her beliefs.

Yip....my thoughts and prayers are with you. I hope for peace, healing and comfort for you and your family right now.

Wow, wish I would have thought of this while my mom was dying on the floor of our home, while I was on the phone with 911 and Dad was giving her CPR. Maybe if enough people on the internet read about it she would have survived.

EDIT - Anyone ever think for one moment that there may be people who DID pray? "People" who paced back and forth while hearing the approaching ambulance in the background in the otherwise still of night while praying "please god, please god, please god - don't let this happen?"

And now what? This posters family members die and none of your prayers were quite strong enough to keep death from knocking on their door?

The point is the post was inappropriate. BN and others have the right to be offended or skeptical just as Wcat or Paka have made the choice to pray for a stranger.

The post was ill placed, bottom line.

Sounds like you are contradicting yourself a bit here. You say if you had stopped to write on the internet asking for prayer your mom may still be alive, yet you then say did we stop and think that some people may have been praying. WHAT? This is not about your mom. Sorry she died, really I am, but this is ONE person asking for prayer. Not to be preached at by you or anyone else. If you don't want to pray, DON't! Sheesh.

I think YOUR post was "ill-placed" and just WEIRD.

I am so sorry for your loss, as I have lost both my parents, also.

I wish you could have been at the ER waiting room at University Hospital after my 16y.o. daughter rolled her truck 7 times, and was ejected out the back window, was "unresponsive" at the scene, and was air lifted to the Hospital. I wish you and others could have seen her soccer team form a circle, hold hands, and quietly pray for her in the waiting room. I wish you and others could hear this mothers quiet prayers in my heart and mind, and every friend, family member, and yes, strangers that prayed for her that day, and afterwards while she was in the Hospital. She amazed all of us, especially her Doctor's with her recovery. Then I wish you could see her now 8 years later. No one will ever convince me prayer doesn't work.
