wrapped the outside with covers, let the inside faucets drip and even leave those cabinets open to allow heat in.....still they burst. the plumber said even with that it can still happen. Its on the garage wall to the outside and there was no insulation on that part of the wall. Sure that probably didnt help.
Thankfully he worked very quickly and got everything fixed!!!

A new appreciation for the rules of City-Data Forum!

Last year I created an open forum for my high school. It is for students, graduates and employees of the school. I have recently been invaded by Russians and other people posting viagra ads, and links to Russian sites. I have had to de-activate the site, take down the ads, posts and banning these memberships. I will be taking the forum private before I re-open the site. It has been a real pain.

City-Data needs to do the moderating to keep the posts relavent to each topic and I can also appreciate the rule for no advertising.

Thanks City-Data for a good forum!!

it helps when people report them. I always do because they're annoying. A mod usually gets rid of it shortly after

There's a piece of software that spammers can use to create accounts and post spam messages in rapid-fire fashion. I've never seen spammers use it here and I forget the name of it, but I once administered a board that received daily visits from it. That was no fun.

What you describe sounds a bit like the mess that software creates.

I always wonder who actually buys something from spam or falls for a Nigerian scam, but then I see those NBC programs or read an article about that person that knew it was probably too good to be true.
I think it would be easier to just throw the victims in jail. There can't be that many of them and once they're gone, the problem will go away too.

(I'll obviously never hold a position of real authority)

These guys were bragging about getting access to my forum from Goggle. I had the forum open so that I wouldn't have to approve every member. Obviously, I was hoping that each member attended Thomas Jefferson High School here in San Antonio. These guys that invaded my site loved my site and were posting pictures from adult web sites. Some were talking about child porn. It got bad. Now while I was correcting the problem, the forum site is down because the forum system site is up for sale. I bet all the other forums were having the same I problem I had. Too bad.

I would love to find another forum that has easier controls. Next time I will make my forum closed system.

where you using phpbb, gy2020?

One thing that works for me is to create a custom field in the registration panel and ask a question that spammers/bots won't be able to figure out. For example, if you created a forum dedicated to san antonio, you can create a custom field that asks the following question: What city does tony parker play for? San Antonio. Worked great for me. PM me if you want the link and more info.

Or, you could buy the same software that CD uses, but it's expensive ($180 or so). And there's a deep learning curve, but worth it if you have a big board and lots of people.

I agree with TexasNick. The bots have OCR capability, which means thay can scan a simple captcha and input it back in when registering. That simple challenge question (which can be as simple as "What color is milk?") should do the trick with the bots. I am an administrator at a phpbb/nuke website and we are going to implement this. I spent countless hours over the past year doing damage control from the bots.
